  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a lot like IBD
but they are not the same!
  • Common Irregular bowel movements and stomach
    pain
  • Different IBS patients do not have inflammation
    in the GI tract

4
Crohns disease vs. ulcerative colitis
  • Crohns disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Gum to bum (the mouth to the anus)
  • Patches of inflammation
  • Throughout every layer of bowel tissue
  • Drugs or surgery can help relieve symptoms but
    not a cure
  • Starts at rectum may extend into rest of colon
  • Affects only the inner layer of the colon or
    large bowel
  • Can usually be controlled with medication
  • Can be eliminated with surgery (where waste is
collected outside the body in an ostomy bag)

5
Symptoms

7
Meds 101
  • Aminosalicylates (5-aminosalicylic acids or 5-
    ASA)
  • Glucocorticoids (steroids)
  • Immunosuppressants Immunomodulators
  • Antibiotics
  • Biologic therapies

8
Surgery
  • Crohns disease
  • Only diseased portion of bowel is removed
  • Disease may return to another part of the bowel
  • Ileostomy may be necessary
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • May be necessary to remove diseased portions of
    the bowel
  • Removing entire colon can cure the disease

9
You said WHAT?
  • Gastroenterologist- a doctor who specializes in
diseases of the digestive system, including IBD.
  • Fistula- when two internal organs or an internal
organ and the skin form an abnormal passage.

You said WHAT?
  • Resection- surgical removal of all or a portion
    of the bowel.
  • Colostomy- a procedure where surgeons connect the
colon to the surface of the abdomen (and waste is
then collected outside the body in an ostomy
    bag).
  • Ileostomy- a procedure where surgeons connect
the ileum (small intestine) to the surface of the
abdomen (and waste is then collected outside the
    body in an ostomy bag).
