All the Paragraphs you submit to me this semester
must show the following
1. A clearly stated topic sentence at the
paragraphs beginning
2. At least ten other sentences that support the
topic sentence idea I will not accept paragraphs
with fewer!
3. Coherence (Use effective transitions)
4. Unity and Order
5. Sentence variety
6. Correct grammar, usage, and punctuation
3 The Topic Sentence
Definition
The topic sentence states the paragraphs main
idea and the paragraphs tone, the writers
attitude toward his or her subject
Seattle can be a very dangerous city.
(subjective impression) The crime rate in Seattle
has risen steadily in the last five years.
(objective imformation) Tha atomic bomb should
never have been dropped on Hiroshima.
(subjective / persuasive) Tha atomic bomb of the
1940s is many times weaker than todays nuclear
weapons. (objective / contrast)
4 Support for Main Idea
A good paragraph fulfills its function of fully
developing the main idea.
The Topic Sentence controls the entire
paragraph
Support Sentences each of these must relate to
the paragraphs main idea

5 Coherence
Coherence is the quality of good writing which
results when all parts are logically related.

6 Unity and Order
When the paragrah is unified and ordered
effectively, all of the content relates logically
to the topic sentence. Do Not take your
reader on any Detours!

everyones paragraph.
I expect my college education to do more than
assure me of a job.
Support this with at least ten more sentences.
It is due at the next class meeting, on time!
10Late paragraph policy
If a paragraph is turned in after class is over,
(1121 ) the highest grade it can get is a B if
it is turned in the next day, the highest grade
it can get is a C. No paragraphs accepted after
day two.
11Formatting the Paragraphs
Please word process all of the paragraphs you
submit to me this semester Double space, and
use a size 11 or 12 font that is easy to read,
like Geneva, Arial, Times, etc.
Place your name in the upper right hand corner.
