2
The land at Carters Grove Plantation was used as
a settlement in the 1600s and a tobacco
plantation in the 1700s.
3
1600s
After Jamestown was settled, other groups came
from England to make their fortunes in America.
The settlers had discovered that tobacco grows
very well in America and it is very profitable to
sell.
In 1619, a group of settlers, known as Martins
Hundred, built Wolstenholme Town.
4
At this time, the Indians were getting hostile
because so much of their land was being taken
over by the settlers. They planned to attack all
settlements along the James river on March 22,
1622. Most of the people at Wolstenholme Towne
were killed (women and children too).
5
Over time, people forgot about the Wolstenholme
settlement. In the 1960s, the plantation was
donated to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
The settlement was discovered on the grounds
of the Carters Grove Plantation when some trees
and vegetation were cleared (it is about 200 feet
from the main house).
6
1700s
Robert King Carter was one of the wealthiest
and most powerful plantation owners in the 17th
century. He owned many plantations and used
enslaved Africans to work on them. Before he
died, he purchased land for his daughter he
specified in his will that the land should be
called Carters Grove.
In 1750, Carter Burwell, King Carters grandson,
built a mansion on the property to symbolize his
own wealth and power.
7
Carters grove had a slave quarter where enslaved
Africans lived.
Multiple families lived in each dwelling.
8
Children ages 10 and up were expected to work in
the fields with the adults.
Adults to old to work the fields and young
children grew food and raised animals for the
slaves to eat.
