• On the 14th July 1789, there was a riot outside
  the Bastille prison in Paris.
• The prison was stormed, the prisoners were freed
  and the governor was killed.

• It was the start of the French Revolution.

• There were only 7 prisoners in the Bastille at
  the time.

So why did it start a revolution?

• In 1789 most of the people of France were very
  poor and some were starving.
• They were ruled by King Louis XVI and Queen
  Marie-Antoinette.

• It is said they were so rich and so distanced
  from the people, that when they were told
• The people are starving, they have no bread
• Marie-Antoinette replied.

• The King and Queen were executed along with
  many other nobles and aristocrats during the
  Revolution and years of Terror that followed.

• After the revolution a document was drawn up,
  declaring the rights of citizens.
• It stated that
• all men are equal

• A song was written called La Marseillaise. It
  is the French national anthem.
