Title: Soooo'You Want to Start a CNA Program, eh

1
Soooo. You Want to Start a CNA Program, eh?
  • OrWhat Rabbit Hole Did You Fall Down????

2
Certified Nursing Assistant Program
  • Why would I choose to do this?
  • CATEs big emphasis is on certifications (in all
    upper level programs).
  • Can use Perkins Funds to build new programs
  • Gives some kids a way to afford college
  • Work way thru school (pays
    more than flipping burgers)
  • Some hospitals pay tuition for CNA ? RN for
    employees.

3
Certified Nursing Assistant Program
  • What may feel overwhelming is actually
    quite do-able.
  • Major questions
  • When in HSTE sequence
    should it be done?
  • HT2
  • HT3
  • What do we need to do it?

4
Certified Nursing Assistant Program
  • Done during HT2
  • Do during 1st semester
  • Will be CNA for 2nd semester at
    hospital
  • Makes HIPAA happy
  • Might be able to do more in clinical rotations

5
Certified Nursing Assistant Program
  • Done during HT3
  • Might have older/more mature students
  • Might do
    Pharmacy Tech or
    Phlebotomy program alternate
    semester

6
What do we need?
  • A program director
  • Must be RN with long term care or skilled nursing
facility unit experience Rehab unit in hospital
    is not sufficient.
  • Can elicit help of RN outside of school
  • After couple of years, RN in school can take over
  • Several schools may share a program director, but
each classroom location needs a separate
    application.
  • Non-RN HT teachers may ONLY teach in areas of
expertise (ie Dental Hygienist may teach
about mouth care). They must also be
    licensed HC professionals.
