Passion/Love/Hate Love and hate are link as one
in the drama. This ambiguity is reflected
throughout Romeo and Juliet, whose language is
riddled with oxymorons. "O brawling love, O
loving hate," Romeo cries in the play's very
first scene, using a figure of speech and setting
up a theme that will be played out during the
next five acts. The theme of love is shown on
different levels, such as love for child to
parent, infatuation, and true love.
Interestingly, Shakespeare ties the theme of love
closely with the theme of hate.

Major Themes
Violence - The feuding between the families kept
the young lovers from being upfront about their
love and marriage, and in that way was the cause
of the tragic deaths. The feud started years ago
and some dont even know what the fighting is
about. It is the death of each familys child
that stops the fighting in the end. The violence
of the feud leads to the death of six people in
the play. Violence is the cause of many other
actions in the drama.

Fate - It was considered fate that the two
star-crossed lovers would meet and fall in love
and then die for each other. Some say that it was
fate that brought these "star-crossed lovers"
together as well as ended their lives. Fate is
blamed for many of the actions in the drama.
