3Objectives
- Increase the consumable and saleable products
from cattle production - Develop processing and marketing structures for
milk and dairy products - Develop cooperative organizational structures for
the management of the three dairy schemes in
Kabul, Mazar and Kunduz provinces - Assist MAIL for the development of policies and
strategies for the dairy sector
4- Increase cattle production
- Improvement of genetic potential of local breed
of milking cows through Artificial Insemination - Fodder Crop Feeding (Demonstration, Seed
production, commercial production and marketing
for concentrated feed and mineral feed) - Animal Health services
- Improvement of Cattle Housing
- Capacity building ( Farmers ( male female),
Project staff, Government staff, NGOs staff and
Leaderships cooperatives and union)
52- Develop processing and marketing structures
for milk and dairy products
- As per daily recording of MCCs, Dairy farmers
were received following amount - 1. Afs 31.11 million (USD 627,318) was paid to
farmers in Kabul area - 2. Afs 20.69 million (USD 417,236) was paid to
farmers in Mazar area - 3. Afs 4.22 million (USD 85,166) was paid to
farmers in Kunduz area. - Dairy equipments were installed in Balkh and
Guzergah dairy plant (Kabul) with 1000 liter/hr
processing capacity - Provision of dairy equipment and building for
Kunduz dairy are under process.
6Increment of milk production and family income
generation
72- Develop processing and marketing structures
for milk and dairy products
Total 4,474,211 liters milk were collected and
the following dairy product sold through 22 dairy
window shops to customers ( 13 window shop in
Mazar, 5 in Kabul and 4 window shop in Kunduz)
83- Develop cooperative organizational structures
for the management of dairy schemes
- According the law of Gov, 15 milk producer
cooperative societies officially registered with
MAIL - The first dairy union in Afghanistan is Kabul
Dairy Union which was established on 30th
November 2006 and has seven cooperative societies
with 416 members - The second dairy union in Afghanistan is Kunduz
Dairy Union which was established on 13th January
2007 and has four cooperative societies with 208
members - The 3rd dairy Union of the Balkh registered on
27. May 2007 and has four cooperative societies
with 290 members.

104. Assist MAIL for the development of policies
and strategies for the dairy sector
- A committee for establishing policy guidelines
and defining a legal framework for the
development of the dairy sector (Dairy Policy
Development Committee) in Afghanistan - Two workshops were held for making dairy policy
in Kabul - Dairy policy drafted and will be finalized in the
next workshop.
11Project Impact
- Increased access to regular and dependable raw
milk market - Increased women participation in the livestock
production - Increased household income from livestock
production - Contribution in part import substitution
- 95.33 FMD and tick born diseases are controlled
and also zoonotic diseases and mastitis are under
controlled in the targeted area of the project - More than 45 selected farmers have improved
breed of cattle - More than 70 selected farmers have cultivated
improved fodder crops - Milk of each cow increased respectively from 1.11
liter to 5.14 liters, during the last 5 years
(Surplus milk )
12Challenges
- Improve present conditions of the processing
facilities in term of size of the schemes and the
technology in processing centers - Increase milk production through intensification
of production - Face competition of dairy imports (including
those produced locally from milk powder) - Increase profit margins to maintain the schemes
- Enhance quality of milk and other dairy products
- Increase availability of qualified staff
- Change from aid to development mode (and
attitude). - Security
