Title: Monte Carlo Studies of the Tower of Power Detector

1
Monte Carlo Studies of theTower of Power Detector
  • Sean R Stratton
  • Rutgers University

2
Recap From Last Time
  • Using MC program to generate data for a tower of
    power detector.
  • Detector consisting of 15 mirrors 5 rings each
    3 mirrors wide.
  • Goal is to detect more events in the 1016 to 1017
    eV range.

3
What Has Changed?
  • Increased the number of mirrors from 15?33.
  • Simulating mirrors with 3x the area of the
    standard detector.
  • Throwing events all around detector instead of
    making the footprint cut.

4
Questions
  • How many more events will be seen at the
    1016?1017 eV range?
  • What do the events look like?
  • 5th ring or 5th wheel?

5
The Tower of Power Detector
  • 33 Mirrors covering 90o of azimuth (15 mirrors in
    rings 3, 4, and 5).
  • Extra mirrors in rings 1 2 to catch edge
    effects.
  • TP3 version uses triple-area mirrors in rings 3,
    4, and 5.

Yellow boxes correspond to standard area mirrors,
Green boxes are triple-area mirrors in TP3
MC. White boxes are not used while making tower
MC.
6
The Tower of Power Detector
  • The mirror is circular and roughly 4m in
    diameter.
  • The radius of curvature and cluster box
separation are maximized for best detector
    response.
  • Winston Cones simulated in ray tracing program,
    not in the MC (yet).

The Winston Cone shown is 10.11cm long
7
TP3 Data Generation and Reconstruction Method
  • Determined via ray tracing program that
triple-area detector will collect 2.88 times more
    light.
  • Modified MC to increase light to mirror if member
    of ring 3, 4, or 5.
  • Modified Doug Bergmans ruspgf program to
increase mirror area if elevation angle gt 30.5o

8
Monte Carlo Running Parameters
  • Throwing along an e-3 spectrum.
  • Using parameters from data set 2.
  • No adjacent mirror trigger in tower detector MC
    (yet).
  • Using the same E/Rp cut for Standard and Tower of
    Power detectors.

9
Profile Mismatch Problem
10
Note no adjacent mirror trigger in tower
detector MCs.
11
Results of MC Data
Numbers in parentheses are normalized to the
standard detector by number of thrown events
12
(No Transcript)
13
Tens digit is the ID of the highest ring
triggered, the ones digit is the number of rings
triggered in that event
14
Whats Next?
  • Include neighboring mirror trigger in TOP MC.
  • Fix the profile mismatch problem in ruspgf
    analysis.
