2Hope is a search for freedom . . . of the
spirit to assert its dignity, of having some
level of control over ones life. To hope for
recovery under the most extreme circumstances is
an act of defiance that permits a person to live
his life on his own terms. It is part of the
human spirit to endure and give a miracle a
chance to happen. Jerome Groopman, M.D. The
Anatomy of Hope

options.
9Depression presents so many variations and has
so many subtle facetsdepends in short, so much
on the individuals totality of causation and
responsethat one persons panacea might be
anothers trap. William Styron Darkness

physically, and spiritually
11What is it you need to support your personal
journey toward recovery?
12Ways You Can Influence Comprehensive State Mental
Health Plans
- Work with your DBSA chapter to influence your
State legislature for new wellness models - Get involved with your State mental health
planning and advisory councils - Join together as a coalition of mental health
care advocates - Work with community-based organizations (e.g.,
schools and churches) to engage them as mental
health advocates - Create partnerships with NAMI and NMHA
- Work with local chapters of professional
organizations (e.g., National Association of
Social Workers or the American Psychological
Association)
13Transformation is . . .
ultimately about newnessabout new values, new
