2Chapter 5 Getting in Touch With Ourselves
3Making comparisons is the cardinal sin of modern
life We can never win the race of life when we
have no idea where were going Coaching teaches
people how to train for the race of life
4In a marathon, the runners know the location of
the starting line, they have the course mapped
out, and they know where theyre going. The
location of the finish line is no mystery. This
isnt so in the race of life. The runners you
coach have already started the life race, but
often they dont know where they are and many
have no idea of where theyre going. Most sense
that something is missing form their lives, but
they may not know what it is. They may have some
awareness of their inner resources and abilities,
but they lack clear goals and dont know how to
find them.
5Each person being coached will need to become
more aware of his or her strengths, weaknesses,
abilities, gifts, pressures, and current
opportunities. Clarifying the issues What
concerns you? What would you like to happen?
Getting to the Issues
6Asking Focused Questions
- Good questions are
- Incisive
- Revealing
- Powerful
7Coaching re-engages with reality when good
questioning is followed by inspired analysis,
detailed action planning, and follow-through. -
Laurence S. Lyons
8Focus on issues by making good inquires Most
coaches avoid why questions since they tend to
encourage analytical thinking, excuses,
defensiveness, or trips to the past. What, When,
How, Who, or Where. What do you mean when you
say? Give me some examples of? Can you
tell me more about that? How was all this
affected by you? When did all of this
begin? What happened next? Im curious.
Tell me more about It seems that this is
something that concerns you and no one else.
9Listening Carefully
- Effective counselors listen especially when
trying to clarify issues. - Listening demands more patience, concentration,
focus, and the ability to keep quiet. - Listening is central to every part of the
coaching circle, although its never more
important than at the beginning.
10Everything in coaching depends on listening
especially listening with the clients agenda in
mind. - Laura Whitworth, Henry Kimsey-House, Phil
Sandahl
11Your mind has to be active at the same time you
absorb what youre hearing. hopes and dreams
about how things could be better. energies and
passions that appear to inspire the person, but
also the energy-drainers that pull the person
down. attitudes and abilities that impact how

routines, habits, and ways of doing things that
might need to be changed.

12Increasing Awareness
Its important to be aware of people Hear or see
what most others miss Envision what could be if
everyone played well Help others get a better
awareness of themselves
13People keep doing things the same ways because it
is easier and less risky The coach steps into
this rut and encourages a time out. This period
may be short and spread unevenly Pause long
enough to evaluate the situation This allows them
to increase their awareness of their current
situation
14- How do you increase awareness?
- Request an information packet
- Psychological tests such as
- Taylor Johnson
- Myers Briggs
- DISC
- Questionnaires
15- Look for obstacles that may get in the way
- Afraid to take risks
- Procrastinators
- Blind spots
- When you coach others you can be more objective
and more likely to see barriers clearly.
16- Jonahs
- People going in circles
- People running
- Swimming in the midst of busy lifestyles
- Not thinking about their futures or possibilities
for moving to other things.
