Green Building

• Definition - Green building is the practice of
  increasing the efficiency of buildings and their
  use of energy, water, and materials, and reducing
  building impacts on human health and the
  environment.

• Located in Lawrence, MA

Lawrence, MA

• Founded in 1845, Lawrence was among the first
  planned industrial communities in the United
  States.

• When it was built in 1906, the mill was hailed as
  the eighth wonder of the world. It was the
  largest building of its kind on the planet. With
  almost 30 acres under one roof and almost a third
  of a mile long, it is still described today as a
  horizontal skyscraper.

Robert Ansin Guest Speaker

• Mr. Ansin is the Chief Executive Officer of
  MassInnovation a company that redevelops old mill
  buildings and converts them into mixed use
  communities.

• Robert Ansin founded MassInnovation in 1997 in
  order to pioneer a new concept in mixed-use,
  residential and lifestyle centers that embody
  sustainable development principles.

A History of Robert Ansin

• Ansin holds a B.A. from the University of
  Massachusetts-Amherst

• Ansin has served on a number of corporate,
  charitable, cultural and economic development
  boards. He is currently a member of the Executive
  Committee of the Merrimack Valley Economic
  Development Council, commissioner of the Essex
  National Heritage Commission, and on the board of
  the Lawrence Boys Girls Club.

My Job as an Intern

• Creating budgets.
• Designing layouts for Monarchs fitness center,
  parking spaces, and storage units.
• Surveying buyers about different amenities they
  would like to see at Monarch.
• Writing proposals, memos, and reports to upper
  level management.
• Researching different green techniques that we
  can apply at the mill.
