Origin
The element is named after the planet Mercury and
the symbol comes from the Latin hydragyrum,
meaning liquid silver.
4 It alloys easily with gold, silver and tin.
These alloys are called amalgams. Its ease in
amalgamating with gold is made use of in the
recovery of gold from its ores.
Compounds
- mercuric chloride(HgC12)
- mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2 )
- mercury fulminate (Hg(ONC)2
- mercuric sulphide (HgS)
5Extraction Method
Can be extracted easily by heating cinnabar, a
red ore (mercury sulfide)
Organic mercury compounds are important and
dangerous. Methyl mercury is a lethal pollutant
found in rivers and lakes. The main source of
pollution is industrial wastes settling to the
river and lake bottoms.
6Uses
Used in laboratories for making
thermometers, barometers, diffusion pumps, ect.
Also used for mercury switches and as an
electrode in some types of electrolysis and for
making batteries (mercury cells). Gaseous
mercury is used in mercury-vapour lamps and
advertising signs. It is important for instance
for caustic soda and chlorine production. It is
used for making some pesticides and antifouling
paint. Mercury is also the basis of dental
amalgams and preparations.
