Resumes
  • The first step in getting the job. A marketing
    device used to gain an interview
  • Resumes must contain the necessary information in
    a clear and easily read manner
  • On average employers only spend 30 seconds
    reviewing a resume
  • Resume should ideally be one page, two pages
    should be the max

Types of Resumes
  • There are four different types of resumes
  • Chronological most commonly used. Jobs are
    listed by most recent first (All word templates
    are this type)
  • Functional resume lists different skills and
    where those skills were gained
  • Currciulum vitae is a detailed listing of
    education, publications, projects and awards
  • Electronic resume the newest form, where you
    can email your resume or enter it on the
    companys website

  • Specific to the job you are trying to obtain

Resume Style and Appearance
  • Easy to read font
  • 11 font size
  • Times New Roman or Ariel
  • Correct spelling and grammar
  • Well organized
  • Up to date information
  • No handwritten or white out corrections
  • Plain, good quality paper

Electronic Resume
  • Make the resume e-friendly by
  • Not using bold, italics or underlining, use caps
    to draw attention . If you want to underline use
    the equal sign under the word
  • Use courier font, size 10 or 12 point
  • Change margins left 1 inch, right 3 inches
  • Replace bullets with asterisks
  • Dont tab just use the space bar
  • Left justify all text

Cover Letter
  • Cover letter is used to apply to a specific,
    advertised position.
  • Broadcast letter is used to uncover opportunities
    in an organization.
  • The quality of the letter is very important
  • Focus on your strengths and what you can give to
    the position

  • Date
  • Name and address of person accepting the resume
  • Salutation Dear Mr/Mrs
  • First Paragraph
  • Job you are applying for and where you saw the
    advertisement
  • State what interests you about the organization
    and the position
  • Sum up the benefits you can bring to the employer

  • Using the job description match what the employer
    is looking for to what you have to offer
  • Use examples to support your qualifications
  • Use educational training
  • Organize thoughts and put the most important
    thoughts first

  • Mention you would like an interview to provide
    more information
  • Include phone number and e-mail address. Be sure
    you can be easily reached
  • End with thanking them for taking the time to
    consider your application
  • Closing Sincerely, Yours truly
  • Your signature and then your typed name
