Pancake Racing
  • The most famous pancake race, at Onley in
    Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The
    contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying
    pan (skillet) and race to the finishing line
    tossing the pancakes as they go. As the pancakes
    are thin, some skill is required to toss them
    successfully while running. The winner is the
    first to cross the line having tossed the pancake
    a certain number of times.

Where does the word Shrove come from?
  • The name Shrove comes from the old word "shrive"
    which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the
    Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so
    that they were forgiven before the season of Lent
    began.
  • Shrove Tuesday is also called Fat Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in Olney England
like nowhere else on earth! Townsfolk gather to
see the original and unique Olney Pancake Race
which is now world famous. Traffic stops while
the competitors make their 415 yard dash from the
Bull Hotel (old coaching Inn) to the Parish
Church of St. Peter St. Paul.

What is a Pancake?
  • A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter
    and fried in a frying pan.
  • A traditional english pancake is very thin and is
    served immediately.
  • Caster sugar (superfine sugar) is sprinkled over
    the top and a dash of fresh lemon juice add.
  • The pancake is then rolled.
  • Some people put golden syrup or jam on their
    pancakes.

  • The world's biggest pancake was cooked in
    Rochdale in 1994, it was an amazing 15 metres in
    diameter, weighed three tons and had an estimated
    two million calories.

  • 2007's Pancake Race was won by Jane Hughes in
    73.5 seconds.
