Civil
The
War
2
What is a
Civil War???
  • A Civil war is a war fought between two people
that belong to the same country.
  • The war that were going to talk about was also
called the War Between the States.

3
The Missouri Compromise
  • 1819- Missouri wants to become a state.
  • The Union (United States) has 22 states. 11
allow slavery and 11 do not. Why would people be
    fighting over Missouri?
  • Both North and South feared the loss of political
power if too many states were admitted as either
    a free or slave state.

4
  • Henry Clay tried desperately to keep the North
and the South from fighting over the slavery
    issue.
  • Along with Missouri, Maine applied to be a state
    at about the same time.

5
  • Did Missouri become a slave state????

6
  • An imaginary line was drawn at 30 degrees 30
minutes north latitude of the new areas.
  • This divided the area into one north area and one
    south area.
  • Areas north of the line were free territory.

John Calhoun
  • He believed in states rights. People that
believed in states rights thought that the
southern states could secede from the Union.
  • He thought each state had the right to decide
which laws to obey, and which not.
  • John Calhoun said that slavery was a God-inspired
system- good for the slaves and good for the
    nation.
  • Calhouns ideas was a factor that led to the
    civil war.

9
Problems between the north and the South
  • The southerners believed that slavery should be
allowed in the entire nation. They wanted slavery
in all of the new territories in the West.
  • Northerners highly disagreed.
  • There was also a lot of economic troubles in the
    south.
  • The south thought they should have states rights
so they could create their own separate nation.
The North thought the nation needed to stay
    together as one.

10
Abraham Lincoln
11
  • Lincoln was against slavery and believed that all
    men are created equal.
  • During the election, Lincoln stated that he
wouldnt interfere with slavery where it then
existed but it should extend no further.
  • When Abraham Lincoln was elected President, many
people in the south viewed this as a success for
the north and the abolitionist cause. The did not
like Abraham Lincoln and especially did not want
to live in a Nation dedicated to antislavery
principles. This led to a big change in the
    Union.

12
  • The year Lincoln was elected is viewed as a
breaking point for the South. They did not want
    him to lead their country.
  • Military companies in the south began to form,
taking names such as the Cherokee Lincoln
Killers to make it clear where they stood on
their feelings towards the new President.
  • The South talked about seceding from the Union
before Lincolns election. One month before
Lincolns inauguration, seven states seceded from
the Union to establish their own, separate
    government.

13
States seceding
  • South Carolina was the first state to secede in
1860. By February of the next year, six more
    states had followed.
  • Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana
and Texas had formed the Confederate States of
    America.
  • These Confederate states selected Jefferson Davis
    as their President.

14
  • Davis followed Calhouns beliefs and argued for
Southern power, extension of slavery into the
Western territories and for the right of a state
    to secede.
  • Jefferson Davis proclaimed to the Nation one
thing All we ask is to be left alone.
  • President Lincoln would not allow for his nation
    of be divided into two.

15
General Grant
16
  • -Ulysses Grant was in control of the Union army.
  • At the time of the war, the Union was also know
    as Yankees.
  • He planned to attack the South until the
confederates were worn down, no matter how many
    lives were lost.
  • During a battle, Grant lost 12,000 people in half
and hour. He lost more men during the war than
Lee had in his entire army, but he was able to
get new troops because so many people wanted to
    fight for the North.

17
General Lee
18
  • Robert E. Lee was the leader of the Confederate
army. The Confederates had the nickname of the
    rebels.
  • He did not approve of slavery or secession.
  • Lincoln wanted Lee to lead the Union army.
  • Lee refused because he would not fight against
    his family in Virginia.
  • Robert E. Lee was thought of a kind man and an
excellent leader. He led the Confederate
    soldiers for four long years.

19
Fort Sumter
  • Fort Sumter was run by Union soldiers, yet
located in South Carolina. (which is now a
    Confederate state)
  • The south ordered all Union military troops to
leave their state so that the Confederates could
    take over the fort instead.
  • They tried to starve the men that were at the
fort, but Lincoln sent over food and supplies
    from the North.

20
  • The Confederate states didnt like what was
happening. They surrounded Fort Sumter so that
the Union soldiers could not get their supplies
that were sent from the North.
  • The Confederates told the Union soldiers that
they could leave peacefully and unharmed if they
evacuated immediately. The Union refused to
accept this offer and decided to stay where they
    were in Fort Sumter.

21
  • The Rebels did not like how the Union soldiers
would not leave Fort Sumter and decided something
    needed to be done.
  • On the morning of April 12, 1861, the Rebels had
    fired on Fort Sumter.
  • This attack is considered the beginning of the
    Civil War.

22
Good Try!
23
Good Job!
  • Missouri was admitted to the Union as a slave
    state.
  • Since Maine applied to be a state at the same
time, Maine was admitted as a free state.
  • This allowed the slave states and the free states
    to both have 12 states.
