Title: Taking the Land

1
Taking the Land
  • The Conquests of Joshua

2
  • The Lord will again delight in you and make you
prosperous, just as he delighted in your fathers,
if you obey the Lord your God and keep his
commands and decrees that are written in this
Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul. Now
what I am commanding you today is not too
difficult for you or beyond your reach
    Deut. 309-20

3
  • It is not up in heaven, so that you have to
ask, "Who will ascend into heaven to get it and
proclaim it to us so we may obey it?" Nor is it
beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, "Who
will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to
us so we may obey it?" No, the word is very near
you it is in your mouth and in your heart so you
may obey it. See, I set before you today life and
prosperity, death and destruction. For I command
you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in
    his ways Deut. 309-20

4
  • and to keep his commands, decrees and laws
then you will live and increase, and the LORD
your God will bless you in the land you are
entering to possess. But if your heart turns away
and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn
away to bow down to other gods and worship them,
I declare to you this day that you will certainly
be destroyed. You will not live long in the land
you are crossing the Jordan to enter and
    possess Deut. 309-20

5
  • This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses
against you that I have set before you life and
death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so
that you and your children may live and that you
may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice,
and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life,
and he will give you many years in the land he
swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and
    Jacob. Deut. 309-20

6
  • After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD
, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses'
aide "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you
and all these people, get ready to cross the
Jordan River into the land I am about to give to
them-to the Israelites. I will give you every
place where you set your foot, as I promised
Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert
to Lebanon, and from the great river, the
Euphrates-all the Hittite country-to the Great
Sea on the west. Joshua 11-9

7
  • No one will be able to stand up against you all
the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I
will be with you I will never leave you nor
forsake you. So Joshua ordered the officers of
the people "Go through the camp and tell the
people, 'Get your supplies ready. Three days from
now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and
take possession of the land the LORD your God is
    giving you for your own.'
    Joshua 11-9

8
Take Possession of the Land the Lord is Giving You
  • Mt. 1112 From the days of John the Baptist
until now, the kingdom of heaven has been
forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold
    of it.
  • Hebrews 41, 2 Therefore, since the promise of
entering his rest still stands, let us be careful
that none of you be found to have fallen short of
it. For we also have had the gospel preached to
us, just as they did but the message they heard
was of no value to them, because those who heard
did not combine it with faith.

Summary Joshuas Conquest
  • Jordan River Crossing
  • Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan
and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard
how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the
Israelites until we had crossed over, their
hearts melted and they no longer had the courage
    to face the Israelites.
    Joshua 51
  • When the power of God is released -- activated
in your life, the enemies tremble.

10
Summary Joshuas Conquest Jericho
  • Joshua 5 Covenantal Sign Then the LORD said
to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach
of Egypt from you." So the place has been called
Gilgal to this day. On the evening of the
fourteenth day of the month, while camped at
Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites
    celebrated the Passover.
  • Much of the conquests was preceded by times of
    obedience and covenantal identification. Seek
    God firstMt. 633

11
Summary Conquest Jericho
  • Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have
delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its
king and its fighting men. March around the city
once with all the armed men. Do this for six
days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams'
horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day,
march around the city seven times, with the
priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them
sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the
people give a loud shout then the wall of the
city will collapse and the people will go up,
    every man straight in."

12
Summary Conquest Jericho
  • Joshua 620-21 When the trumpets sounded, the
people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet,
when the people gave a loud shout, the wall
collapsed so every man charged straight in, and
they took the city. They devoted the city to the
    Lord
  • Vs. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,
so that you will not bring about your own
destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you
will make the camp of Israel liable to
destruction and bring trouble on it. Principle
    of First Fruits

13
Summary Conquest Ai
  • Lessons of Ai defeat following victory
  • Humility must follow victory.
  • How you live affects me. Body of Christ
  • Obedience is safe
  • Obedience brings blessing
  • Obedience makes way for the miraculous.
  • Achans Sin took the devoted things.
  • Vs. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,
so that you will not bring about your own
destruction otherwise you will make the camp of
    Israel liable
  • Valley of Achor

14
Summary Conquest the Amorite Kings
  • So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire
army, including all the best fighting men. The
Lord said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them I
have given them into your hand. Not one of them
will be able to withstand you.
  • Victory -- Hailstones The sun stood still
    the battle is the Lords
  • As they took the land they possessed and occupied
    it.

15
The Unseen Battle Rages
  • 2 Cor. 103-5 For though we live in the world,
we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons
we fight with are not the weapons of the world.
On the contrary, they have divine power to
demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and
every pretension that sets itself up against the
knowledge of God, and we take captive every
thought to make it obedient to Christ.

16
Taking the Land
  • Joshua 141 Now these are the areas the
Israelites received as an inheritance in the land
of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son
of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of
    Israel allotted to them.
  • Js. 183 Joshua said to the Israelites "How
long will you wait before you begin to take
possession of the land that the LORD , the God of
your fathers, has given you? Avoid complacency,
    passivity

17
  • For I know the plans I have for you," declares
the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then
you will call upon me and come and pray to me,
and I will listen to you. You will seek me and
find me when you seek me with all your heart. I
will be found by you," declares the Lord, "and
will bring you back from captivity. I will
gather you from all the nations and places where
I have banished you," declares the Lord, "and
will bring you back to the place from which I
    carried you into exile. Jer.
