  • Science Fair Backboards

Overview
  • All projects must have a notebook and a backboard
  • The notebook must contain reports on literature,
    statement of the problem, materials used,
    variables and controls, hypothesis, procedure,
    data, results, conclusions, and recommendations
  • The backboard must be a summary of the stuff in
    the notebook

Backboard Summary
  • Describe the major elements of the project
  • Must be easily read from 3 feet away
  • Someone reading your board should get a good idea
    of your project within 2 minutes (without looking
    at anything else)
  • Graphs, photographs, illustrations, and equipment
    displays are good
  • Flashing lights, glitter, excessive color, etc.
    are not

The Board
  • Regular tri-fold board is optimal
  • Maximum of two such boards stacked on each other
  • Information should be computerized, free of
    spelling and grammar errors

What to Include
  • A title something professional yet catchy
  • Summaries of the following (varies depending on
    project)
  • Statement of the problem
  • Hypothesis
  • Procedures
  • Results (photos, graphs, data tables, discussion)
  • Conclusions
  • Applicability to the outside world

Tips and Tricks Writing the Information on the
Board
  • Your backboard is only a summary your notebook
    is where most of the info should be
  • Make sure everything is readable and clear to a
    person who has no idea about your project
  • Try to limit your colors to a maximum of two,
    besides white and black

Tips and Tricks Creating the Board
  • Test out a few different layouts
  • In general, dont use a glue stick or white glue
    to attach paper, especially thick paper (they
    comes off easily)
  • Use permanent double-sided tape or some other
    more-permanent adhesive instead
  • But dont glue the paper down until you are sure
    of the layout
  • Printing the whole board on one large page has
    also been done
