Before Using a GPS to Collect Data
  • Set up GPS with correct
  • Map Datum WGS 84
  • Location Format Decimal Degrees
  • Time Zone
  • Distance and other units (feet or meters)
  • Think about what data you will collect and how
    you will name and record it
  • This unit is a simple unit and you will have to
    have a log book to go along with it to keep
    track of attributes for each waypoint

  • Remove back cover by lifting and turn small ring

Install two AA Batteries and replace cover

Activating Unit the First Time Go outdoors
  1. Turn on unit - press red light bulb button
  2. When Accept screen comes on press Page key to
    accept
  3. Leave unit on as it acquires satellites and finds
    a location
  4. Note number of satellites and regions of sky they
    are in

  • Use Zoom in and out buttons to look at current
    location

Setting Up Data Collection Properties
  1. Press Menu
  2. Use Toggle wheel and highlight Setup Map
  3. Press Enter

  • Note there are Menu Tabs that you will go through
    to set up the unit
  • You may want to go back and customize some of
    these later
  • Use Toggle Wheel and Enter button to move from
    Tab to Tab or within a Tab Press Enter to
    select the item to change, then Toggle to correct
    option and press Enter again

  • Look at each item and change to your preferences.

  • Be sure to change to correct Time Zone for the
    place you will be collecting data

  • You can select feet or meters as you prefer for
    your Units

Location is a VERY important Tab
  1. Change Location Format to Decimal Degrees
    hddd.ddddd
  2. Map Datum WGS 84

Collecting a Waypoint
  • Press and hold down Menu button
  • Use toggle wheel to move to name of this
    Waypoint which is 001
  • Press Enter
  • Use toggle wheel on each letter to select a name
    for the location.
  • Press Enter when you have toggled to correct
    letter
  • When finished use toggle wheel to go to OK and
    then Press Enter
  • That waypoint will now be named in your Units
    memory.

Saturday Field Trip
  • We will collect waypoints at several SHORT stops
    on our way to Padre Island. Please be sure you
    do this at each stop and then write a short
    description for your Log Book
  • We will be spending the major part of our time
    collecting field data on vegetation density in
    one location on Padre Island
  • This will include creating a 30 x 30 and a 60
    x 60 meter test area

Back in the Lab - Monday
  • BRING your GPS to the Lab
  • We will download your field trip data and create
    a simple map on top of the Corpus Christi remote
    sensed image.
  • Look at your notes on spectral signatures and
    look at the location and size of the pixel you
    created with your GPS points.
  • Does your spectral data concur with your
    visualization from the image of Padre Island?
