ESP and EFL
  • What is the difference between English as a
Foreign Language (EFL) and English for Special
    (Specific) Purposes (ESP)?
  • ESP usually refers to Business English, Technical
English, Medical English, Legal English, etc.
  • It could be said that all TEFL is about ESP,
since it should meet the special needs of the
    students.

3
ESP and EFL
  • Should we try to teach the same general English
    to every student?
  • Every student has different learning preferences,
    learning styles, multiple intelligences,
    proficiencies, and learning needs.
  • In practice, it is very difficult to give
    everyone what they need.
  • Which is why autonomy, learning-to-learn, and the
    student-centred approach began.

4
ESP and Language-Learning
  • Korea is experiencing a boom in 2-year vocational
    colleges.
  • Teaching materials for Tourism English, Nursing
English, Engineering English, or Medical English,
    however, are mostly non-communicative and
    non-interactive.
  • There is a need for learning materials which
apply contemporary TEFL principles to the ESP
    situation.

5
ESP and Language-Learning
  • ESP programs need to cover special vocabulary and
    technical language.
  • But this is a small part of ESP teaching.
  • In addition, ESP teaching should be autonomous
    and student-centred, using collaboration, group
    work, tasks, and performance assessment.
  • Just as with the rest of the ELT profession, ESP
    teaching should foster higher-order thinking
    skills

ESP Goals
  • Even in ESP teaching, we must consider the
    holistic needs of the students.
  • We must teach the specific language needed for
    the Special Purposes (Tourism, etc.).
  • But we must also give students the language
skills to teach themselves how to learn.

12
Total Goals
  • Students who learn effectively will be effective
Tour Agents, Hotel Staff, Travel Guides, Nurses,
    Doctors, Engineers, etc.
  • These students need more than vocabulary and
    situational language.
  • They need higher-order thinking skills, learning
    skills, social skills, emotional management
    skills, and linguistic skills.

13
  • The rest of this presentation will show how these
goals have been incorporated into a Tourism
    English textbook Visit Korea.
  • There will be an explanation of a sample chapter,
followed by a workshop, in which we can discuss
    the relevant principles and ideas.
