Birth and Death
  • James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in
    Almonte, Ontario, Canada.
  • He died on November 28, 1939 because of a heart
    attack.

Invention of Basketball
  • James Naismith invented basketball on December
    1891, on a winter day.
  • It was cold to do events outside, so he thought
    of a new indoor activity.
  • He called it basketball because it was played
    with two peach baskets and a soccer ball.

Early Years of Basketball
  • Back then basketball started with 18 men.
  • The games were played in the YMCA gymnasium in
    Springfield, Massachusetts.
  • They used a soccer ball and tossed it in a peach
    basket.
  • The games were rough and bloody. They caused a
    lot of fights.

  • As a young boy James Naismith attended the
    Bennies Corners Rural School.
  • He went to Almonte High School on 1875-1877 and
    on 1881-1883.
  • He went to McGill University, Presbyterian
    College, YMCA training school and University of
    Colorado.

  • James Naismith was the second child of John
    Naismith and Margaret Young.
  • His parents were Scottish immigrants who arrived
    in upper Canada in 1852.
  • He had a sister named Annie and a brother named
    Robbie.
  • His dad was a carpenter and a builder and his mom
    served as a streamstress while tending her house.

  • James Naismith was married two times.
  • He married Maude Sherman on 1893 and on 1939 he
    married Florence Kinkaid.
  • His children were Helen, Maude, Annie, Jack,
    Margaret and Jim.
