  • As President Wilson wanted to
  • strike a new note in international affairs
  • Put an end to American Imperialism
  • Exemplify sheer honesty and even unselfishness
  • He was unsuccessful

  • It is a fearful thing to lead this great
    peaceful people into warbut the right is more
    precious than peace, and we shall fight for the
    things which we have always carried nearest to
    our hearsfor democracy, for the right of those
    who submit to authority to have a voice in their
    own governments, for the rights and liberties of
    small nations

The Mexican Revolution
  • After 17 years under a brutal dicator, Mexico was
    taken over by ANOTHER brutal dictator
  • As a result, President Wilson refused to
    acknowledge his government
  • Wilson tried to help Mexicans fight against him
    as much as possible by allowing weapons to be
    sent to Mexico
  • In April 1914, American Sailors visiting Mexico
    were arrested for entering a restricted area.
    they were released but when the Mexican
  • government refused to apologize for the arrest,
    Wilson used the Opportunity to overthrow Huerta

  • Many Mexicans did not like this
  • One anti-American leader, Pancho Villa led
    attacks on Americans within the states, forcing
    president Wilson to send over 6000 troops into
    Mexico to find him
  • Wilson eventually gave up and recalled his
    troops, but not before his actions in Mexico had
    greatly U.S. foreign relations.

Why do we care?
  • The U.S. was looked upon so poorly for its action
    towards Mexico that it practiced a policy of
    ISOLATIONISM where is avoided interaction with
    other countries
  • Elsewhere, the world goes to war and , ashamed,
    we avoid entering it

  • Militarism- building up armed forces
  • Alliances- agreements to help other countries in
    the event of war
  • Imperialism- trying to build an empire
  • Nationalism- extreme pride in ones country

  • Background
  • In the 1860s, Prussia began a series of wars in
    order to unite the German states by 1871 the
    unification of these states had lead to a German
    Empire which soon became one of the most powerful
    nations in the world
  • On their quest to unite, they had attacked France
    and forced it to give up land making France and
    Germany enemies

Alliances
  • To protect itself, Germany formed the Triple
    Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy, while
    France formed the Franco-Russian Alliance with
    Russia
  • Britain remained Neutral until it entered an arms
    race with Germanycausing them to take Frances
    side
  • Consequently, the French, British and Russians
    formed the Triple Entente

  • Nationalism people believed that those who
    belong to a nation should have their own country
    and government
  • In the Balkans( traditionally ruled by the
    Austro-Hungarians and Ottomans) however, there
    were so many different cultures and groups that
    all the different cultures wanted independence

The Outbreak of War
  • The different groups in the regions, the Serbs,
    Bosnians, Croats and Slovens began to gain their
    independence
  • in 1908 however, Austria-Hungary took over Bosnia
    indicating that Austria Hungary never had any
    intention of letting the Slavic people become
    independent.

Assassination of the Archduke
  • In June 1914, the Prince of Austria Hungary,
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot while visiting
    Serbia
  • Gavrilo Princip- a member of a Serbian
    Nationalist group called the Black Hand was
    arrested and killed for the murder but the Austro
    Hungarians blamed all of Serbia
  • They WANTED to start a war

  • Austria-Hungary wanted to CRUSH Serbia On July
    28th Austria declared war Serbia
  • Germany then declared war on Russia
  • ( who was on the side of the Serbs)
  • Germany THEN declared war on FranceEventually
    Great Britain, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria
    joined in too hence

  • U.S. was Neutral
  • but with many immigrants supporting their
    homeland most Americans favored the allied cause
  • British used Propaganda to gain American support
  • Banks gave loans to the Allies as well so they
    wanted the Allies to win so they would get their
    money back

  • At the same time, however, Americans did not want
    to ENTER the war
  • But THEN
  • The Lusitania sank
  • The British had set up a blockade to keep Germany
    from getting goods-and food in response German
    U-boats sank the Lusitania, killing 1200,
    including 128 Americans

  • Germany REALLY did not want the U.S. to enter the
    war
  • As a result, they made the Sussex Pledge in which
    Germany agreed to stop attacking Merchant
    shipsthey lied

  • Zimmerman Telegram A German Official (
    Zimmerman) proposed Mexico alley itself with
    Germany
  • This made the U.S. VERY angry.
