Blind-Spot Detector
  • Mike Cutri
  • Ben Hirsh
  • Kaiel Kim
  • Maryann Savulich
  • Joe Schwartz
  • Jun Wang

2
Car Accidents (the numbers)
  • Cost more than 230 billion dollars
  • 2.9 million people injured
  • 42,636 people killed, 115 people a day, 1 death
    every 13 minutes
  • 28.9 of all crashes are from the side or angle
  • 16.1 of all crashes involve fixed objects

3
What is the improvement?
  • ELIMINATE BLINDSPOT
  • Not seen by the driver
  • Cars not seen while driving, parking lots,
animals, getting out of parking spaces
  • Electromagnetic EPS sensors located on the sides
in the rear part of the car connected to a
central unit located inside the car
  • Provide the driver with a high pitched beeping
noise that will increase in loudness and in
frequency as object approaches the car range is
    up to 10 yards

4
More about the Improvement
  • Can work in conjunction with the already
    available front and rear sensors
  • Mostly limited to only be available in luxury
    cars
  • Can be bought separately as an add-on to the car
    and installed manually
  • Connected to main central unit and will appear on
a section of the front lcd screen of the vehicle

6
Car accident
  • There were 6,181,000 accidents in 2004
  • 6,420,000 auto accidents in the US in 2005
  • There are 16,934 accidents reported to the police
    each day in United States
  • 89,000 people died in car accident related deaths
    in China in 2007
  • 200 to 300 people die in car accident each day in
    China

8
What is our project
  • Have a center unit
  • Have the three sensors
  • One for back and two for sides
  • When the car get so close to you the sensor will
have the sound or light to warn you
  • It is will help to prevent the accident

9
Example
10
Automobile Blind Spots
  • Yellow highlights indicate field of vision

11
Core Components
  • Control box (processing unit)
  • Interior console (includes display/speaker)
  • Electromagnetic sensors

12
How it would function
13
Motion sensor cost components
  • Plastic Body
  • Ultrasound emitting housing
  • Labor Costs
  • Wiring Costs

14
Retail Motion Sensors
  • Analysis of similar style Motion detectors
  • Prices ranged from 50 through 150.
  • Average of 10 similar products were priced at
    124.21

15
Total Estimated Costs
  • Plastic housing labor to create body
    approximately 50
  • Labor Costs for installation
  • average hourly salary 20/hr.
  • Ultrasound housing
  • approximately 10
  • Wiring Costs
  • approximately 25

16
Value of the product
  • The value of the product is dependent on many
    factors
  • Underlying total cost of product As stated in
previous slide it would take us around 82 to
    manufacture
  • Competition in market the market for blind spot
sensors is unexplored, the closed market is rear
sensing which averages 125 for those sensors

17
(continued)
  • Intended market
  • our intended market is the luxury car market,
which allows us to make our price higher
  • The value of the blind spot detector is 375

18
Non-Monetary Value
  • Cannot be quantified
  • Added Non-Monetary Value
  • Safety
  • Life
  • Reduced Stress
  • Comfort Zone

19
Creative Techniques
  • Brainstorming
  • Green Hat/ Creative Thinking
  • Organization Techniques
  • Structure groups thinking
  • Thinking hats
  • White
  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Black

20
Information Situation Questionnaire
  • Information about the system and its environment.
  • Car
  • Transportation
  • Wheels, motor, steering, windows, plastic, metal,
brakes, locks, transmission, signals, lights, gas
tank, axel, alternator, exhaust system, battery,
    catalytic converter
  • Pressing the gas pedal causes gas to flow and
steering allows the driver to control the
    movement of the car.
  • Super Systems Roads, Highways
  • Other Environments Garage, Parking Lots,
    Assembly Line

21
ISQ
  • 2. Available Resources
  • Engineering
  • Use existing systems mirrors, turn signals, back
    up sensors
  • Experts in the field
  • Information about the problem
  • Eliminate drivers blind spots
  • The structure of the car and limitations of
    mirrors
  • None that we know of
  • Drivers reflexes, differences in each drivers
    visual limitations

22
ISQ
  • Changing the System
  • The structure of the car, mirrors, adding sensors
  • Cost (luxury vehicles), width of the car,
additions that will distract other drivers on the
    road.
  • Criteria for Selecting Concepts
  • Transportation, limitations of technology
  • Moderately priced or luxury cars
  • Should be done in time for new line/ year
  • Not too inventive because applying it to many
    cars will increase road safety

23
ISQ
  • History of attempted solutions to the
    problem
  • Make use of technology from parking/ backup
    technology
  • Any vehicle including motorcycles, buses, and
    even airplanes
