Datasets
D
  • The primary purpose of National Datasets is to
enable the same standard of information to be
generated from care records, independent of the
organisation or system that captures the data
  • Datasets are structured lists of individual data
items each with a label, definition and set of
    permissible values, codes and classifications
  • Datasets already exists for cancer, CHD, diabetes
and older people. Others are also in development.

Hospital Episode Statistics
H
  • HES is a data warehouse that contains information
about hospital admissions in England. The data in
HES comes from the Secondary Uses Service (SUS),
which collects data thats passed between
    healthcare providers and commissioners.
  • HES contains data about admitted patients and
    outpatients
  • 15 million records for admitted patients and 55
    million for outpatients each year

Immunisation
I
  • We collect and publish the number of people who
are immunised against childhood diseases by their
first, second and fifth birthday, over 65s
    immunised against influenza and immunisation
against tuberculosis (BCG) for young babies and
    older people at greatest risk.
  • Source of data is the Health Protection Agency
Centre for infections and the IC itself
  • For example, MMR uptake currently 85

L
Little people
  • The National Child Measurement Programme collects
information about childrens health to inform
local planning and targeting of resources and to
enable tracking of local progress against
    Government targets on childhood obesity.
  • This national programme involves all children in
Reception and Year 6 having their height and
weight recorded. The programme takes place in
    schools every year

Maternity statistics
M
  • Ever wanted to know...
  • How many women gave birth by caesarean section?
  • How many women had an epidural?
  • How many women had a 'normal' delivery?
  • The annual maternity publication can answer all
of these questions plus many more, again using
the HES source. This publication is currently
    being reviewed, consultation document is
    available.

17
Mental health
M
  • We produce information on patients who have
either been detained, or who are cared for under
    the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Patients are formally detained in the interests
of their own health and safety or for the
    protection of others.
  • Some patients, not detained, receive compulsory
care in the community known as guardianship.

18
Medical research information service
M
  • The Medical Research Information Service provides
    health information to support medical
    researchers.
  • This service transferred to the NHS Information
Centre on 1 April 2008 from the Office for
    National Statistics.
  • The service can identify and monitor study
cohorts, report on the status of study members
and provide long-term follow up for longitudinal
    studies.

19
National clinical audits
N
  • We manage a number of audit projects in the
priority areas of cancer, diabetes, heart
    disease.
  • These national audits are designed to measure the
quality of patient care and improvements over
    time.
  • Each audit looks at the care patients are
receiving and gives clinicians reliable, valid
information that helps them review their
performance and identify areas where they can
    make improvements.

20
Omnibus surveys
O
  • Omnibus Survey is a flexible, customisable online
tool designed to help NHS and social care
organisations submit vital data to The IC with
    minimum burden on themselves.
  • With a familiar web based interface and a
consistent entry format it is easy for
respondents to use, resulting in better
    participation with fewer errors.
  • Examples of omnibus collections include
  • Stop Smoking Services
  • Ambulance performance
  • Childhood immunisation
  • Family planning

21
Prescribing Support
P
  • The unit hosts and manages the national
    prescribing information database which provides
details of the number of items and costs of all
    prescriptions dispensed in the community.

22
Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF)
Q
  • QOF is a voluntary annual reward incentive
programme for all GP surgeries in England
  • QOF contains four main components or domains
    (clinical e.g. hypertension, organisational e.g.
patient info, patient care experience and
    additional services e.g. child health
surveillance). Each domain consists of a set of
measures of achievement, against which practices
score points according to their level of
    achievement.
  • Through the QOF, general practices are rewarded
financially for aspects of the quality of care
    they provide.

    ork-qof

23
Review of Central Returns (ROCR)
R
  • The ROCR process supports the Department of
Health and it's Arms Length Bodies in reducing
the burden of data collections from the NHS. This
    ensures that
  • collections fit with national health policies in
    England
  • requests for the same information are not
    repeated
  • NHS organisations can complete these in as little
    time as possible.
    on-and-use/the-review-of-central-returns-rocr

24
Social Care
S
  • The IC produces a range of information that
demonstrates how social care is delivered
  • Information available cover care provided for
adults, children and those with disabilities
  • Whether you want to monitor the uptake of direct
payments, know what money is being spent on
services or how services for older people are
delivered, you can find a wealth of data and
    analysis
  • www.ic.nhs.uk/statistics-and-data-collections/soci
    al-care

25
Teeth
T
  • Would you like to know how many NHS dentists
    there are?
  • Or, what courses of treatment have been carried
    out by dentists?
  • Even, how much dentists earn?
    ary-care/dentistry

26
User surveys
U
  • Possibly the most important measure of social
care is what the service users themselves think
of the care they have been given.
  • Each year The IC carries out user surveys to get
feedback from different groups of service users.
Information for the surveys is gathered by
    councils with social services responsibility.
    al-care/user-surveys

27
Varenicline
v
  • Among the smoking cessation aids used in NHS Stop
Smoking Services, Varenicline is now the most
    successful in helping people quit.
  • The NHS IC produces quarterly reports on
performance of the NHS Stop Smoking Services
including information on how many people try to
    quit how many are successful.

28
Workforce statistics
W
  • The NHS workforce in England has grown by 30
over the past decade. More than 1.3 million were
employed in 2005, compared with one million in
1995, making the workforce figure the highest
    ever.
  • The ICs statistics can tell you which groups of
the workforce have seen the largest and smallest
    increases.

29
X-rays
X
  • There are over 14,500 radiographers in the NHS
dealing with diagnostic and therapeutic x-rays,
reported in our non-medical workforce census

30
Young People and drug misuse
Y
  • As well as producing our own Drugs Misuse
publication, we also commission the Drug Use,
Smoking and Drinking among Young People in
England survey, which is used to help measure the
governments target of reducing the use of Class
    A drugs among young people.
