Jerusalem's Gates
2The history of jerusalem is full of wars and
invasions because it is a precious jewel. In the
third millennium BC Jebusites fortify their city
and the military gates to protect it from the
successive attacks. Muslims were concerned with
the restoration of the gates of Jerusalem,thus
we found the leader Salah AL Din himself was
carrying stones during the large restoration
after the opening of Jerusalem.Followed by
Ottomans who concerned with the gates and walls
of Jerusalem . Jerusalem has eleven gates , only
seven are opened and used but the other are
closed. The history of most of the opened
gates, due to the time of the Ottoman Sultan
Suleiman Alqanoni , who built the great wall of
Jerusalem at the year 1542 AD .

4Damascus Gate ( Bab al-amoud )
Is the largest and the most beautiful one in
Jerusalem.Located in the middle of the northern
side of the wall of Jersusalem between Herod's
gate and the New one. "No God but Allah and
Mohammad is the messenger of Allah " these wods
were engraved on the gate ,. Several names have
been given to this gate ,such as Damascus gate
because it was the path of the convoys heading to
Damascus and Victory gate , but the most
important one is Al amoud Gate , was called so
because the Romans has erected a statue in the
memory of Emperor Adrianus and placed it over
the bar.
5New Gate ( Bab Al-Jadid )
Located in the west northern side between
Damascus gate and Hebron gate about 1500 metres
far away from Damascus gate. It is considered the
newest gate in Jerusalem .Also was called Abid Al
Hamid Ottoman Sultan) to make it easier for the
people of Jerusalem and the surrounding villages
to enter and exit from . Was built when the
German Emperor Jleom II visited Jerusalem in the
Ottoman Empire in 1889 AD
6Lion's Gate ( Bab Al-Asbat )
Lion's gate ( Bab Sittna Maryam ) Located in the
north of eastern side , and is the closest gate
to Al Aqsa mosque . There are two lions curved at
the entrance of each side of the gate to
symbolize the apparent Bebars ,then rebuilt by
the great Ottoman Sultan Suleiman in the year
945 AH / 1538 AD . Lions gate is the most famous
name of the gate because of the four animals
that decorate the gate.
7Herod's Gate ( Bab Al -sahira )
Located in the east of northern side between
damascus gate and Lion's gate, about 500 metres
far away from Damascus gate. Today is considered
one of the main entrance for Jersusalem. The
most famous name of the gate is Al sahira which
is mentioned in the Holy Quran . It is also
known in Arabic as the Flower gate.. Named Herod
because there is an old belief that the house
which is within the door was the palace of the
Roman King Herod.
8Jaffa Gate - Hebron Gate (Bab Al khalil )
Located in the middle western side .It is
considered the second largest gate in Jerusalem
for its importance that it's the only door to
enter and exit to the western part of the walls
of Jerusalem . Above the gate there are arcs and
towers engraved by the words " No Allah but Allah
and Ibrahim is Khaleel Allah " - Hebron gate
is considered the most famous name ,it was called
by that name because it leads to the city of
Hebron ,and its second name is Jaffa gate and has
been called so because it also leads to the city
of Jaffa.
9Dung Gate ( Bab Al maghariba )
Located in the east of southern side of the city
of Jerusalem . Vehicles can enter and exit from
it .Many names have been given to this gate,one
of them is" Silwan gate" because it leads to the
village of Silwan. It's also known as the gate of
moors because of the North African immigrants who
lived in neighborhood next to the gate in the
16th century.
10Zion Gate ( Bab Nabi Dawud )
Located in the south-western entrance to the city
of Jerusalem that is to the north-west from the
Jaffa Gate, and to the east from Dung Gate. One
of the gates of Jerusalem, built during the reign
of Othman Sultan Sulayman alqanoni 1542 Ad- 947
AH , the door is now called Zion related to the
hill of Zion one of the four hills of Jerusalem,
which was built by Jebusites, Zion is a Jebusite
word means fortress. Also called the Prophet
David , which is the most famous name of the gate
.
