  • UNBELIEVABLE??
  • ADDICTION IS EASY.

36
The biochemistry of sugar
  • C12H22O11
  • A disaccharide of glucose and fructose Sucrose
  • All edible plants contain fibre, protein, fat,
    starch and sugar.
  • Fibre starch ? sugar energy
  • Refined sugar is almost pure sucrose.

37
Sugar beet
38
Sucrose alters the metabolism
  • In digesting a fruit, the body has to work to
    make the sugars available.
  • By eating chocolate, sweets, cakes and drinking
coca cola or soft fizzy drinks, the energy is
available in a rush instead of a drip, and the
stomach has less work to do.
  • The sugar then meets the bodys energy
requirements and the rest of the food becomes
    simply the vehicle.

39
Enzyme inhibition?chemical addiction
  • If energy needs are met by sugar, the body stops
    producing starch- and fibre-converting enzymes.
Then we can no longer digest these.
  • So food industries reduce the fibre content in
    prepared foods.
  • The addict/victim becomes hooked on a constant
flow of fast sugar. This is a chemical addiction.

40
Sugar or fibre?Feast or famine?
  • If you eat enough dietary fibre, you dont crave
    sugar.
  • If you eat both sugar and fibre you gain weight.
