Description of Badger
  • School population is between 1,350 1,400
  • Special Education population of 110 125 or
    about 8 - 9 .
  • Latino population of around 160 students
  • 108 Certified Staff
  • 9 12 Union District
  • Location Lake Geneva
  • Resort Community
  • School and community somewhat disconnected

Artifacts
  • Geared toward upper level students
  • - No importance given to Special Education or
    the Latino students
  • - A great deal of self-promotion given to the
    number of AP / Honors classes offered, not the
    actual data that evaluated success.
  • - Absolute resistance to heterogeneous
    grouping.
  • Segregation of Latino students
  • Financially very stable
  • Under achieving school
  • Three years ago two out of five areas below state
    average in state testing.
  • Poor achieving in athletics with limited
    participation

  • But evaluation of our special education
    program showed what was the next big step - The
    move to inclusion.

Where we were
  • All EEN students took all test in resource rooms
  • All final exams for EEN students were
    administered in the LMC
  • Case loads of EEN teachers 30
  • Many EEN students in Resource all day
  • EEN students pulled out of core academic classes
  • Separate offices for each EEN staff member
    throughout building

  • No department chair or leadership
  • County dictated who was hired
  • Acknowledged concerns of EEN teachers, general
    education teachers and students
  • Four team taught classes
  • Recognized disregard for LRE
  • Poorly written and inappropriate IEPs not
    focusing on educational and career goals
  • I-pods and eating written in IEPs
  • Free hall roaming

2006 2007 School Goals
  • Goal 1--Badgers students and staff will work to
    increase our ACT score to an average of 23. We
    will increase WKCE scores in the areas of math,
    reading, and language by 3, increase scores in
    science and social studies by 2, and increase
    the writing score by .2.
  • (A MAPS goal will also be added once a base
    line measure has been determined at the beginning
    of next year.)
  • Goal 2Badger will decrease its number of student
    failures by 30 overall.
  • Goal 3---Teachers will demonstrate an increase in
    implementation of content specific reading
    strategies which will improve student achievement
    in reading across the curriculum and test
    scores.

    for every course at Badger completed and entered
    into the Eclipse software with a minimum of two
    common assessments for each semester by the end
    of the 2007 2008 school year.
  • Associated Strategies
  • Continue inservicing on use of the Eclipse
    software.
  • Schedule curricular time to input curriculum into
    Eclipse.
  • Continue work during collaboration to develop
    common assessments.
  • Increase Emphasis on the ESL Population
  • Badger High School will increase the number of
    students who advance one level of proficiency on
    the ACCESS test by 10.

  • Continued growth of the Maldef program for Latino
    parents.

  • Coordinate efforts from teachers, coaches, and
    advisors to actively recruit more Latino students
    into a wider variety of school activities.
