Introduction
  • This resource unit will cover communities.
    In this unit, students will learn what a
    community needs to be successful, and how they
    can contribute to their community.
  • During this seven day unit, students will
    participate in activities, learn about different
    roles in the community, discover how the Wright
    Brothers invented flight, and attend a field trip
    to the Fairborn Government Center.

  • Recognize that the actions of individuals make a
    difference, and relate the stories of people from
    diverse backgrounds who have contributed to the
    heritage of the United States
  • Identify elected leaders and authority figures in
    the home, school and community and explain
    reasons for having persons in authority.

Content Day One
  • History of Fairborn
  • The history of Fairborn will be discussed on the
    first day of the unit. The book titled, The
    River Speaks, will be read to the students.
    Students will learn that Fairborn was formed from
    two villages to make one large community.

Content Day Two
  • Government in Communities
  • On day two the students will learn about the
    leaders of the Fairborn Community. The children
    will learn about the Mayor, City Council, School
    Board, Judge, Police Department, and Fire
    Department

Content Day Three
  • Fairborn Government Center
  • Children will go on a field trip to the Fairborn
    Government Center and learn about how a city
    government is run. They will learn the
    responsibilities that the Mayor must attend to.

Content Day Four
  • People in the Community
  • Day four will show the children how diverse a
    community can be. The children will discover
    that Fairborn has quite a diverse population
    living in it. Students will learn that it takes
    everyone working together to make a community a
    safe and enjoyable place to live.

Content Day FiveGroup Problem Solving
  • The Huffman Dam has broken, what actions must the
    Mayor take in order to protect the citizens of
    Fairborn?
  • Students will work in groups to come up with
    possible solutions to this problem.

Content Day Six
  • Wright Brothers
  • Students will learn about the history of the
    Wright Brothers. They will learn how the Wright
    Brothers contributed the power of flight to the
    world.
  • Students will watch the video titled, The Wright
    Brothers at Kitty Hawk. (ISBN 0-7921-2987-3)

  • Community Helpers
  • Children will learn about the responsibilities of
    policemen, firefighters, and city maintenance
    workers.

Activity 1
  • Introduction Introduce the community lesson.
  • Development Students will try to lift a
    parachute over their heads with only two people.
    Children will continue to be added until the
    parachute is successfully lifted above the entire
    classes heads.
  • Culminating activity Ask students how a
    community is like being able to lift the
    parachute. A community takes everyone working
    together to make it successful.

Activity 2
  • Introduction Tell the students that they will
    be going on a field trip to the Fairborn
    Government Center to learn about how a city is
    run.
  • Development Children will take a field to the
    Government Center
  • Culminating Activity The students will discuss
    the different city leaders and what each of their
    roles are in the running of the city.

Activity 3
  • Introduction Careers on Wheels. Tell the
    students that they will learn about different
    helpers in the community.
  • Development Students will have the opportunity
    to explore different community helper vehicles.
    There will be a police car, fire engine, street
    sweeper, and an ambulance for the children to
    explore.
  • Culminating Activities The children will have
    the opportunity to interact with different
    community helpers and talk about which career
    they liked best.

Activity 4
  • Introduction Children will learn about the
    Wright Brothers and how they invented the
    airplane
  • Development The students will each make a paper
    airplane to represent the Wright One Flyer,
    designed by the Wright Bros.
  • Culminating Activity Students will fly their
    airplanes and determine which design was best for
    flying.

Activity 5
  • Career Day
  • Introduction Discuss with the children about
    the different types of careers they learned about
    from the Careers on Wheels day
  • Development Students will dress like one of the
    community helpers they learned about from Careers
    on Wheels
  • Culminating Activity Talk with the students
    about who they dressed up as and what that person
    does to help the community.
