Diabetes Mellitus - Hypothesis

• Interaction of AGE and endothelial cells will
  result in endothelin-1 (a potent vasoconstrictor)
• The previous cellular reactions may take place in
  the periodontium, thus accounting for increased
  risk for severe attachment loss
• Tissues from retina, kidney, and nerves have
  shown permeability to glucose
• Pathogenesis of periodontal disease in diabetics
  might also be glucose-mediated
