2
Privacy
  • The fourth amendment provides us with provisions
    for privacy
  • Civil Rights legislation further states that we
are all due unalienable rights that should not be
    tampered with.
  • These rights provide us with the comfort of
knowing that we have some things to ourselves.

3
Mr. Bush
  • Under the premise of National Security, has
performed actions that conflict with our right to
    privacy.
  • Our daily activities are often monitored without
    any probable cause.
  • Has continually promised results as a result of
    privacy intrusion.

4
History Repeats Itself?
  • The suppression of our civil liberties during
  • times of war is nothing new.
  • The 1798 Sedition Act set the precedent for the
treatment of citizens during times of conflict.
  • Every major war has seen some sort of unfair
    treatment imposed on citizens.

5
Examples
  • World War I- led directly to anti-Communist
    sentiment
  • World War II- Japanese internment in America
  • Cold War- nuclear arms race against U.S.S.R.
    would last nearly forty years.
  • Vietnam- American fatalities were not always
    reported

6
What is different about today?
  • TRUST
  • MORE INFORMED AMERICANS
  • PAST INFORMATION HAS BEEN REVEALED
  • SIMILARITIES TO PREVIOUS FAILURE IN AMERICAN
    HISTORY
  • EVERYONE IS AFFECTED

7
Details
  • Past presidents were able to convince people of
the importance of unity, and they
  • delivered results.
  • The media was not as sophisticated so information
could be hidden from the public easily.
  • People trusted the president.
  • American citizens were not as informed as to what
    was going on.

8
Good Start
  • After 9/11 the Patriot was enacted with the hopes
    it would help catch terrorists.
  • Americans were willing to sacrifice personal
    freedom to secure the country.
  • Americans wanted a swift response to the attacks
    themselves.

9
Bad Finish
  • The Results have not met expectations.
  • American casualties are mounting.
  • The situation in Iraq resembles Vietnam.
  • Atrocities and other secrets cannot be hidden as
    well in the Information Age.
  • We are not seeing the direct fruits of our
    sacrifice.

10
Can we help him?
  • If Mr. Bush could have followed his predecessors
more closely, he could have fooled us.
  • People would be willing to sacrifice if they knew
    they would be safe.
  • Mr. Bush should be more willing to discuss
policy, and keep the people informed.
