BACKGROUND
METHODS
- The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) is an
independent, non-partisan, non-profit institution
whose mission is to improve the health of people
living in cities. - NYAMs Social Work Leadership Institute (SWLI)
works to ensure that America's older adults and
their caregivers get the care they need. The
goals are to - increase the number of social workers trained to
work with the aging population - advance the field of aging care through research
and best practices - forge multidisciplinary alliances to advocate on
behalf of older adult care and their caregivers
and - promote policy that will encourage care
coordination for older adults. - The Center for Aging Policy (CAP) is an
initiative of SWLI at NYAM. CAP was founded in
2005 by funding from The Atlantic Philanthropies.
CAP pursues public policy solutions to ensure
that there is a strong workforce of social
workers with geriatric training to support health
and social service needs of America's growing
older population.
- LITERATURE SEARCH AND REVIEW PROCESS
- Search question
- What outcomes measures exist on social work
practices? - Has changed as the database developed
- Not confined to the elderly
- Attempt to focus on care coordination
- Social Work Abstracts, SocIndex Fulltext,
Sociological collection, PsycINFO, CINAHL,
PubMed. - Bibliographic management software used to manage
results - EBD team originally examined over 2000 abstracts
and selected appropriate articles according to - Measure
- Outcome
- Social Work
- Intervention
- 190 articles were selected for further review.
- Each article is evaluated for level of evidence
and indexed by 2 reviewers. - Final evaluation by third reviewer.
- DATABASE DEVELOPMENT
- Database designer MySQL
FUTURE DIRECTIONS
- Increase the number of Advisory Group members,
who are examining these issues - Purpose
- Mission statement
- Audience
- Policy makers
- Practitioners
- Niche
- Do not duplicate other efforts (Campbell or
Cochrane). - Revise and refine searching, according to future
focus of the EBPD. - Revise and define review criteria interventions,
outcomes, evidence levels. - Improve search interface add Boolean
capabilities. - Write procedure manual, including search help.
- Track usage.
- Include review articles and meta-analyses.
- Include grey literature. The EBPD links to the
NYAM Librarys Grey Literature Report that
already includes relevant material.

THE EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE DATABASE (EBPD)
Based on principles of evidence-based healthcare,
the goal of this database is to make easily
available a body of literature showing the
effectiveness of social work interventions and
treatments that can be used by interested
parties, including advocacy groups, policy
makers, social workers and students, to support
leadership roles for social workers and
educational programs for training geriatric
social workers. It is designed to focus on the
needs of the elderly, but currently includes
studies of effectiveness in all age groups.
