History

• Le Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Balata was started
  in 1875 and was completed in 1914. Like the
  Eiffel tower, it was criticized for being too big
  and looking out of place.

The Designer

• A contest was held to determine the architect of
  the Basilique de Sacré-Coeur de Balata. Of the
  78 entries, famous architect Adabies was best
  fit for the project.

• The first stone was placed in 1875 but was not
  completed until 1914. Abadie himself did not see
  the finished product because he died in 1884

• The final cost of the Basilique was 40 million
  francs!
• There were services in the Basilique 29 years
  before it was completed!
• Inside the church there is one of the worlds
  largest mosaics!
