Scissor Lifts
2
What is a Scissor Lift?
  • Is An Aerial Work Platform
  • Usually it can only move in the vertical plane

3
What is a Scissor Lift?
  • The mechanism to achieve this is the use of
    linked, folding supports in a criss-cross 'X'
    pattern.
  • The upward motion is achieved by the application
of pressure to the outside of the lowest set of
supports, elongating the crossing pattern, and
    propelling the work platform vertically

4
What is a Scissor Lift?
  • Sometimes has extending bridge to allow closer
    access to the work area

5
What is a Scissor Lift?
  • Vertical Elevations
  • Models can lift to elevations starting at 15
  • Models can lift to elevations up to around 55

6
What is a Scissor Lift?
  • Operating Motor
  • Diesel/Electric
  • Electric
  • Propane

7
What is a Scissor Lift?
  • Operating Terrain
  • Finished Flooring
  • Rough Terrain (Dirt/Mud)

8
Scissor Lift Safety
  • Only trained personnel can operate the lift
  • Employees must inspect the machine before each
    shift

9
Scissor Lift Safety
  • A Full-Body Harness should be worn at all times
and is to be attached to the basket at the
manufacturers anchor point when operating an
    aerial lift.

10
Scissor Lift Safety
  • Employees shall always stand on the floor of the
basket and shall not sit or climb on the edge of
the basket or use planks, rails or other devices
    for a work position.

11
Scissor Lift Safety
  • Watch the leading edge
  • Watch for any holes in the slab

LEADING EDGE
12
Scissor Lift Safety
  • Be cautions of Welding and Cutting slag and
    sparks falling on batteries
  • Slag and sparks can possibly cause an explosion

13
Scissor Lift Safety
  • Scissor lifts that have a small foot print can
    tip easily

14
Scissor Lift Safety
  • Do not stick anything between the folding
    supports
  • It can cause loss of limb or can cause the
    machine to malfunction

15
Accident Information
  • Many Accidents and Deaths are a result of one of
    the following
  • Untrained/Unauthorized employees operating a lift
  • Employees falling off the lift
  • Lift tipping over
  • Contact with live electrical wires
  • Lift encountering a leading edge or a hole

16
What Not to Do
  • Do Not Stand on Rails

17
What Not to Do
  • When operating the lift Tie-Off to Platform

18
What Not to Do
  • If outside of the platform, Do Not Tie-Off to
Lift Rather Tie-Off to members capable of
    holding 5,400 Lbs of Force

19
Accident Prevention
  • ALWAYS tie off
  • When working around electrical wires be aware of
    any potential electrocutions
  • When driving the lift be aware of the
    surroundings
