Title: WIND

1
WIND
  • I dont think were in Kansas anymore

2
How is Wind Measured?
  • With ANENOMETERS!

Aerovane, Lazer doppler anenometer and anenometer
3
Westerlies come from the West
  • They do not GO west, they COME FROM the west.
    Got it?
  • Easterlies...
  • Northwesterlies
  • Southeasterlies well you get the idea.
  • But a West wind goes West

4
Wind Chill a measure of heat loss from your body
5
What Causes the Wind?
  • Wind moves from areas of high pressure to areas
    of lower pressure
  • HIGH LOW

6
1. Local Winds
  • Caused by unequal heating of the Earths surface
    within a small area

7
Local Wind (review)
Suns Radiation
8
High Density
Hot Air Molecules Rise and cool
Low Density

Lake Effect or Sea Breeze
11
Land Breezes
12
Monsoons sea breezes that last a long long time
13
Mountain Winds
14
Global Winds
  • Produced by the movement of air between the
equator and the poles long distances!

15
Global Winds
  • Polar Easterlies
  • Prevailing Westerlies above 60 degrees
  • Horse Latitudes (neigh) calm at 30
  • Trade Winds Easterlies
  • Doldrums calm at the equator

16
Global Winds
17
Coriolis Effect
  • Hot air is lighter than cold air and will rise
into the sky until it reaches approximately 10 km
(6 miles) altitude and will spread to the North
and the South. If the globe did not rotate, the
air would simply arrive at the North Pole and the
South Pole, sink down, and return to the equator.
    BUT

18
The Power of the Wind
  • The sun radiates 174,423,000,000,000 kilowatt
hours of energy to the earth per hour. ( the
    earth receives 1.74 x 10 17 watts of power )
  • About 1 to 2 of the energy from the sun is
converted into wind energy... That is about 50 to
100 times more than the energy used by all plants
    on earth to grow!

19
Summary
  • Winds are caused by unequal heating of the
    Earths surface
  • Its measured using anenometers
  • 3 types of wind local, global, jet stream
  • Coriolis Effect is due to the Earths rotation
