Who is RBRC?
  • Industry Funded, NFP, Public Service Organization
  • Mission To promote recycling of used
    rechargeable batteries Operate national
collection program for battery recovery and
    recycling in U.S. and Canada
  • Product Stewardship Weve been walking the walk
    since 1996

3
Why is rechargeable battery recycling important
to your Green Initiatives?
  • Universal Waste Certain battery chemistries
required to be recycled (landfill prohibited)
  • Some Components are toxic to environment-
    cadmium, lead, other metals
  • Recycling infrastructure well established, viable
  • Growth of rechargeable batteries in marketplace gt
    cordless/wireless products
  • Reportable data on another material diverted from
    disposal
  • Convenient recycling at any location statewide
  • You likely generate more rechargeable batteries
    than you think

4
What can be recycled with RBRC?
  • Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Nickel
Zinc, Lithium Ion, Small Sealed Lead Batteries
  • Used Cell Phones
  • ______________________________________
  • Examples of Electronics Powered by Rechargeable
    Batteries
  • Two Way Radios Cell and Cordless Phones
  • Laptop Computers Portable Power Tools
  • Hand Held Scanners Field Monitoring Equipment

  • Significant cost savings over paying to have
    batteries recycled along with other
    universal/hazardous wastes
  • How can RBRC program be free?
  • License recycling seal (350 companies)
  • Funding support from battery manufacturers as
    environmental stewardship initiative

9
Why RBRC?
  • Experience, Compliance, Responsibility,
    Convenience
  • No Cost Entire program is paid for by battery
    industry as product stewardship initiative
  • Convenience Pre-paid, pre-addressed and
    bar-coded,
  • universal waste compliant collection boxes
  • Automatic Replenishment of boxes
  • Reporting Data (by enrolled location and battery
    chemistry)
  • Environmental Compliance All batteries
processed in N.A. through Inmetco (PA licensed
    smelter)
  • Industry funded environmental stewardship
program- recognized by USEPA and State of
