What kind of book are YOU reading?

Fiction or Nonfiction
  • Most books and stories are either fiction or
    nonfiction.
  • Fiction means the story is NOT true and
    Nonfiction means the story IS true.
  • There are many KINDS of fiction like historical
    fiction, realistic fiction, science fiction,
    fantasy, and folktales.
  • There are LOTS of genres of books, but youre
    just going to learn about 4 of them.

Nonfiction
  • Nonfiction books contain information that is
    based on TRUE facts. The information is not made
    up.
  • Examples Missouri, Hurricanes, Sea Creatures,
    Rocks and Minerals, Dogs

Realistic Fiction
  • A realistic fiction story takes place in modern
    times. The characters are involved in events that
    could really happen.
  • Examples Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, The Last
    Holiday Concert, Holes, Report Card

Fantasy
  • Fantasy books contain parts that are NOT
    realistic like 1. Talking animals 2.
    Magical powers
  • Examples Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter

  • A biography is the story of a real persons life
    that was written by someone else.
  • Examples Martin Luther King, Jr., Sacajawea,
    George Washington Carver, Helen Keller, Harriet
    Tubman

Author's Purpose
Authors have several main reasons for writing
their books. The authors reason for writing
something is called his or her PURPOSE for
writing. The main reasons for writing are 1. To
inform (to teach you about something) 2. To
entertain (to hold the attention of the
reader through enjoyment) 3. To persuade (to
convince you of somethingor to make you do or
believe what the author wants you to do or
believe)
