1Major J. Cletus Goetz, II Deputy District

US Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District
Biography Major Clete Goetz reported for duty as
the Deputy District Engineer in July 2007. As
Deputy District Engineer, he functions as chief
of staff and is first line supervisor for human
resources, logistics, finance, counsel, safety,
information management, public affairs, internal
review, management analysis, and equal employment
opportunity. He also serves as the primary
interface with the local Federal Executive Board,
conducts public meetings and acts as the District
Commander in the Commanders absence. He was
commissioned as an Engineer Officer after
graduating from the United States Military
Academy at West Point in 1997 with a Bachelor of
Science degree in Civil Engineering.
MAJ Goetz served as a Project Manager in the
Buffalo District prior to becoming the Deputy
District Commander. A native of Rome, New York,
Major Goetz has held numerous command and staff
positions during his military career. His first
duty assignment was as an airborne combat
engineer platoon leader, light equipment platoon
leader and support platoon leader in the 27th
Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne), Fort
Bragg, North Carolina. Following a brief
assignment to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri he
served as an Assistant Division Engineer Liaison
Officer with the 10th Mountain Division (Light
Infantry) at Fort Drum, New York and plans
officer with Coalition Task Force Mountain,
Bagram, Afghanistan. After returning from
Afghanistan he was the company commander of 642nd
Engineer Company (Combat Support Equipment) at
Fort Drum, New York where he served for 10 months
in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. MAJ
Goetzs civilian education includes a Masters of
Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the
University of Missouri at Rolla, and a Masters of
Science Degree in Construction Engineering and
Project Management from the University of Texas
at Austin. He holds a Professional Engineer
license from the state of Missouri. His military
education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and
Career Courses, the Combined Arms and Services
Staff School and the French Humanitarian Demining
School. He is Ranger, Sapper, Airborne, Air
Assault and Jumpmaster qualified. His military
awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the
Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation
Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army
Achievement Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign
Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the National
Defense Service Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster)
and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
