The Five Food Groups
  • The base of the pyramid, the biggest and widest
    section, is filled with the foods we should get
    plenty of every day.
  • As you move up, the sections get smaller, which
    means that we should eat a little less of these
    types of foods.
  • Up at the top, the point of the pyramid, are the
    foods that we should eat only once in a while.

The Grains Group
  • The grain group gives us carbohydrates for the
    energy we need to play, learn, sleep, and keep
    our bodies going all day!
  • Foods in this group include breads, pasta,
    muffins, cereal, and bagels.
  • It is recommended to have at least 6 servings a
    day.

The Vegetable Group
  • Foods in the vegetable group give us vitamin A
    that helps us see the dark and keeps our skin
    healthy.
  • Vegetables also give us vitamin C which helps
    prevent disease.
  • Foods in this group include carrots, broccoli,
    green beans, peas, corn, lettuce, and celery.
  • It is recommended to have at least 4 servings a
    day.

The Fruit Group
  • Fruit gives us vitamin C which helps us see and
    is important for healthy teeth and gums.
  • Fruit also gives us vitamin A which keeps our
    skin and hair healthy.
  • The potassium that we get from fruit helps us
    work our muscles and the fiber helps our
    digestion of food.
  • Foods in this group include apples, oranges,
    bananas, pineapples, peaches, melons, and grapes.
  • It is recommended to have at least 3 servings a
    day!

The Milk Group
  • Food in the milk group keeps our bones and teeth
    strong and healthy.
  • Food in this group include milk, cheeses,
    yogurt, pudding, and even ice cream!
  • It is recommended to have at least 3 servings a
    day.

The Meat Group
  • Food in the meat group helps build strong
    muscles.
  • Food in this group are high in protein and iron
    which helps our bodies grow and repair body
    tissue when we get cuts and scrapes and is very
    good for our blood.
  • Food in this group include red meat, chicken,
    fish, eggs, nuts, dry beans, and peanut butter.
  • It is recommended to have at least 2-3 servings a
    day.

Fats, Oils, and Sweets
  • Foods in this group arent very good for our
    bodies.
  • To much of these foods can make us overweight and
    can cause us to develop health problems.
  • Foods in this group include cake, cookies,
    candy, chips, soft drinks, donuts, butter, oils,
    and salad dressings.
  • It is recommended to eat these types of foods
    sparingly.
