3Aloha from Hawaii! My name is Thomas. I live with
my parents on the island of Maui in Hawaii. I was
born in Hawaii eight years ago. Both of my
parents were born in California. My parents moved
to Hawaii the year before I was born. I enjoy
living in Hawaii very much. I have so many things
to do here. I can swim, ride my surfboard, go
fishing, or play baseball. The weather here is
almost always very nice. The beach is not
far from my house. My mother and I go to the
beach about three times a week. My father likes
to play golf on Saturday mornings. Sometimes I go
with him, but usually I go to the beach with
my mother. My grandparents live in California.
We visit them once a year. They visit us at least
twice a year. My cousins all live in
California. They usually come to Hawaii for two
weeks in the summer. Living in Hawaii is awesome.
I wouldnt want to live anywhere else.

4My family went to the beach last year to
celebrate Fathers Day. My parents both took a
week off from work. The entire family went on the
trip, including Roscoe, our family dog. For the
first three days of our trip, we did all the
things we usually do at the beach. We swam, we
walked on the beach, and we buried Dad in the
sand. Those are always fun family things to
do. On the fourth day of our vacation, Dad
rented a jet ski for my sister and me to ride in
the ocean. My sister and I had both already
learned how to ride a jet ski. It is always fun,
and we really enjoy it. We begged our father to
try it, too. At first he told us he didnt want
to ride it. Mom told him he should ride it to see
what it was like. He decided to give it a try.
Dad loved riding the jet ski in the ocean!
He rode it three more times before the afternoon
was over. The next morning, Dad was almost too
sore to get out of bed. His back hurt and he
could hardly move. He told us he would not
be riding the jet ski that day. He was going to
go sit on the pier and fish. Fishing was going to
be his sport for the day.
What caused Dad to be too sore to get out of bed?

5Daisys Daisies When Daisy Durham was born, her
mother said she looked like a flower. Her father
said she looked like a daisy. Thats how she got
her name. Daisy likes growing daisies in her
yard. She has a painting of daisies in her room.
Sometimes she wears clothes with daisies on them.
Daisy likes other flowers, but the daisy is her
favorite. There are over a thousand different
kinds of daisies, one for every kind of
mood. Daisy likes being named after the daisy.
The daisy she likes best is white with a yellow
center. It is a beautiful flower. Daisys mom
cuts fresh daisies from the yard and puts them in
Daisys room in a beautiful vase. Daisy likes it
when her mother puts the daisies in her room. It
is a nice and thoughtful thing that her mother
does. Daisy will always be grateful to her father
for naming her after such a special flower.

8A Windy Day Marias third-grade class had a
picnic at the beach in Galveston. The children
ate peanut butter sandwiches, oranges, and
brownies. They held tightly onto their napkins
after a stiff breeze blew the teachers
handkerchief into the waves. After lunch, Maria
and Carmen got a kite that they had made. Carmen
held the kite high over her head. Maria took the
string. Okay! Maria called. Carmen let go of
the kite. Maria ran. The kite rose into the air.
Then a fierce gust of wind snatched the string
from Marias hand. Aww, wailed the
children. The kite flew higher, over the
crashing waves

9The Daredevil J.J. had always loved adventure.
But no matter how many times he was warned about
safety, J.J. never paid attention. He had broken
his arm twice and his ankle once, but still
thought he could do anything, no matter the
danger involved. Last winter, J.J. wanted to
practice ice skating. His mother had warned him
many times not to skate on the pond alone. There
would be no one to help him if he had an
accident. J.J. tried to find a friend to join
him, but all of his friends were busy. He
strapped on his skates and headed out on the ice.
He practiced his speed and his turns. As he was
gaining speed, he heard the ice crack a couple of
times but thought nothing of it. Then it
happened. In an instant, the ice under J.J.s
skates gave way, and he found himself falling
under the icy water. Instinctively, J.J. grabbed
onto the sheet of ice as his head went under
water. He quickly pulled himself back out and
grabbed a breath of air. As he struggled to pull
himself out of the water, the ice continued to
break away. He could not get out! He was scared
and tired of struggling when he saw his dad
running toward him with a rope. J.J. grabbed hold
of the rope, and his dad pulled him to safety.
J.J.s eyes were full of tears as he held his dad
tight. Now he understood that danger is very real.

10The Vanishing School Supplies Mom, I need more
pencils for school tomorrow. I think I should get
a lot, Timothy said as he jumped in the car.
Wow, you must really be working hard. You have
used so many school supplies already. Last week
you needed scissors and the week before that it
was markers, replied Timothys mother. The next
morning, Timothy packed two packs of brand new
pencils in his backpack. When his mother picked
him up, Timothy said, Hey, Mom, can we swing by
the store to get more colored pencils? What?
Timothys mother asked. Timothy Arnold, what is
going on? You cannot possibly be using all your
supplies this quickly. Well, I am sharing them.
It all started when Gerald made fun of Petes
pencil. It was almost completely used up and the
eraser was totally gone. It looked pretty bad.
Then Pete said that his family could not buy any
more pencils until his dad got paid again. So I
started thinking about it and realized that Pete
never had his own scissors or markers, so I gave
him mine. Timothy, I am very proud of you. I
have an idea. Lets invite Pete to get ice cream
with us after school tomorrow. I think the two of
you could learn a lot from each other.

11Shopping with Dad As she took a deep breath, her
nose was filled with the sweet smell of fresh
cookies. They were baking somewhere in that huge
store and Cindy had to find them. She tried to
slip away from her father while he was busy
selecting a cart, but he noticed her before she
had made it past the apples and pears May I ask
where you are going, young lady? said her
father, winking at her over his thick glasses.
Cindy just smiled and returned to his side. I
would like you to push the cart. Mom has written
a long list for us, and I need someone with the
strength to keep up. Can you do that,
Cindy? Cindy nodded her head and started up the
first aisle. Her father walked beside her and
removed a piece of paper from his pocket. He
pointed to the first thing on the list, which led
Cindys eyes to the shelves on the left side of
the aisle. She spotted the dish soap her mother
always used and put a bottle into the cart. Her
father put a check mark next to that item on the
list. One down, thirty-seven more to go.

12 The Littlest Bear The littlest bear at the
North Pole was also the loneliest bear at the
North Pole. He spent each day wishing for a
friend his own size. Then one day he watched the
older bears building snow friends. Suddenly the
little bear knew how to solve his problem. He
spent the entire day building a snow bear to look
just like himself. He wrapped a scarf around his
friends neck and slipped boots over his feet.
Then the littlest bear realized that his friend
could not play inside his house. Thats okay,
he thought. He ran inside, grabbed an old
blanket, and collected his toys. He spread the
blanket out on the snow and laid his toys on top.
The two bears spent the rest of the winter
playing and laughing. The little bear never felt
lonely for a minute. Then the spring air came to
the North Pole, melting the snow bear to the
ground. At first the littlest bear was sad, but
as he knelt down to the puddle, he saw his own
reflection. He realized that he had grown over
the winter months and was no longer the littlest
bear. Even better, he was no longer the loneliest
bear!
Was the Littlest Bears solution to the problem a
GOOD solution? Why or why not? Use two details
from the story to support your answer.

17The students in Miss Nelsons class were acting
up again. They were making spitballs and paper
airplanes, rather listening as sweet Miss Nelson
read during story hour. Something will have to be
done, Miss Nelson said to herself. The next day,
Miss Nelson was not at school. The children
planned to misbehave worse than ever as they
heard footsteps approaching the door. They were
horrified to meet their substitute teacher, Miss
Viola Swamp. She wore an ugly black dress and
spoke in a nasty voice. The students were afraid
and did exactly as they were told. After a few
days, the children missed Miss Nelson. They were
beginning to think they would be stuck with Miss
Swamp forever. Then one morning they heard
footsteps approaching their door and they were
pleasantly surprised to find Miss Nelson
approaching! During story hour that day, no one
misbehaved. There were no more spitballs or paper
airplanes. That evening, Miss Nelson went home
and giggled as she noticed the ugly black dress
hanging in her closet.
Why did Miss Nelson dress up like Miss Swamp? Use
