• At age nine, moved to Southern California
• Remained in California until young adult

• Attended University of California at Berkeley
  and worked at Hillside Elementary as a teachers
  aide
• Started writing in last year of college
• First book not successful, so attended law
  school
• Passed bar exam, but chose writing full time

• Met wife, Carla, when he was a visiting author
  at a school in Texas
• They were married in 1985
• Daughter, Sherre, was born in 1987
• Family members are inspirations for characters
  in his books
