The Three Branches of Government
  • The United States has three different branches
    that make up the government. These branches are
    the Executive branch, the Legislative branch, and
    the Judicial branch. Each branch is just as
    important as the other.

Executive Branch
  • President
  • Role is to approve and carry out laws passed by
    the legislative branch.
  • Negotiates treaties, acts as the head of state,
    commander in chief of armed forces
  • Receives the most support in the area of foreign
    policy
  • Four year term and has a maximum of 2 terms
  • Vice President is next in line for presidency if
    something happens. The vice president will finish
    the term.

The legislative branch consists of two houses
in the congress. The roles of
the legislative branch are to write laws,
discuss laws, and vote on laws
The Legislative Branch
  • House of Representatives
  • Consists of 435 members
  • Each state gets a certain amount of seats, this
    is determined by the population of each state
    (census)
  • Representative are elected by their state and
    serve a term of two years.
  • Must be 25 years of age, live in the state that
    you represent, and be a United States citizen for
    7 years
  • Senate
  • Consists of 100 seats
  • 2 people from each state serve in the senate
  • Serve six years in a term
  • The Vice president is the head of the senate but
    does not vote unless there is a tie
  • Must be 30 years old to be a senator, live in the
    state that you are representing, and be a United
    States citizen for 9 years

  • Explains the meaning of the Constitution and the
    laws that are passed by the congress
  • Decides if something is constitutional or
    unconstitutional.
  • Punishes the guilty, protects individuals right
  • 3 levels of federal courts
  • Supreme Court
  • Highest court in the land
  • 9 justices
  • Appointed by the senate and nominated by the
    president
  • No term limits
  • Supreme court decisions are final, no other
    courts can over rule their decision

  • Review cases and see if laws were applied
    appropriately
  • Trial court
  • T.V. courts
  • Holds the original trial
