2Antarctica
Antarctic the frozen continent surrounding the
Earths South Pole, and the frigid seas
surrounding it, are home to many animals..The
South Pole is the coldest, wildest, and driest
place on Earth. The coldest temperature ever
recorded on Earth was at the South Pole it
went down to-128.6 degrees F (-88.0 degrees C)!
The Antarctic land does not support many life
forms. Most of the land of Antarctic is a frozen
desert, with less precipitation that the Sahara
Desert (under 2 inches5cm a year). Oddly
enough, 70 of the worlds fresh water is frozen
in the region of the South Pole.
3Facts
Orca Whale
Emperor Penguin
- In Antarctica the sun is not strong enough to
melt the ice so animals can move around. The snow
fox has white fur that is camouflage so when they
are after a prey the prey an not see them and
thats how they catches their prey.Oxen stand in
a circle called a herd to protect their babies
because wolfs try to attack them for their babies
and food. North Pole and South Pole animals are
adapted to sun cold air and ice all around. Harp
seals have fur when they are born but as they
grow up they loose hair and grow gray hair.
People in the arctic do not have buses or cabs
they use snowmobiles.
4PLANTS
- Arctic buttercup,Arctic willow,northern prime
rose, pale maidens,Arctic wood worm, fast flowers.
5Animals
- Some animals leave Antarctica during its
horrendous coldest months,from June until
August.Animals like the Humpback Whales migrate
to warmer waters to reproduce. Emperor Penguin
remain at the South Pole year-round. - Each summer, the new growth lures many migratory
birds and animals into the tundra. The permanent
residents of tundra have adapted to the cold and
wind. Most have compact bodies with short limbs,
bills, and wings to converve heat. Thick
deposits of fat or blubber, or dense layers of
feathers or fur further insulate the
animals.Another good insulator is the earth its
self. Animals burrow into the snow to avoid
winds. Species such as Empire penguins huddle
together in groups of several thousand to keep
each other warm. The penguins take turns moving
and rotating to the edges of the group before
returning to the warm interior.Around
Antarctica,some creatures have developed and
anti-freeze,a protein compound which allows them
to survive extreme temperatures.
