• There are two types of rainforests
• Tropical
• Temperate

• Similarities between the two
• over 100 inches of rainfall each year
• high humidity
• efficient natural recycling
• canopy and understory layers
• poor, shallow soil

Tropical Rainforest

• Higher temperatures
• More flowering plants
• More animals and plants

• Not in the tropics
• More biomass (total weight of all living matter)
• Changing seasons with short, cool summers
• The worlds tallest trees
• Cooler temperatures

Forest Floor

• Dark, humid, damp, and soggy
• Green plants
• Home to fungi, insects, reptiles, jaguar, and the
  anaconda

Understory Layer

• 30-60 feet above the forest floor
• Receives small amount of light
• Home to many colorful flowers, butterflies,
  frogs, ants, and bees
• Gorillas, pythons, leopards, and vipers live here
  as well

Canopy Layer

• 60-90 feet above the forest floor
• Branches grow close forming a dense mesh
• Lianas (vines) create woven netlike effect
• Receives large amount of light and rain
• Leaves are smooth with pointy tips
• Half the rain forest mammals live here

Emergent Layer

• Uppermost layer
• Tops of the oldest trees
• 90-150 feet off the forest floor
• Way leaves exposed to the most sunlight, wind,
  and temperature fluctuations
• Animals eagles, parrots, monkeys, insects,
  reptiles
