Title: Layers of the Rainforest
1Layers of the Rainforest
By Miss. Vogg
2The trees of the tropical rain forest provide
shelter for many animals, such as birds, monkeys,
cats, butterflies, insects, snakes, and frogs.
3Imagine a tree in the rain forest and divide it
into four layers the bottom layer is the forest
floor the second layer is the understory the
third layer is the canopy and the fourth is
called the emergent layer.
4The Emergent Layer
This emergent layer has the tallest trees,
towering as much as 200 feet above the ground
with trunks that measure up to 16 feet around.Â
Most of these trees are broad-leaved, hardwood
evergreens. Sunlight is plentiful up here.
Animals found here are eagles, monkeys,
bats, snakes, and butterflies
5The Emergent Layer
Canopy Layer
The Canopy Layer of the forest forms a roof over
the two remaining layers. Most canopy trees have
smooth, oval leaves that end in a point. Many
animals live in this area since there is a lot of
food such as flowers and fruits
The animals in this layers make their home in the
lianas, which are vines that hang from the trees.
- Animals found in this layer include monkeys,
- snakes, toucans, bats, ants,
- parrots, hummingbirds, and
- treefrogs.
6Understory Layer
The Understory Layer receives little sunshine so
plants have to grow larger leaves to reach the
sunlight. Some fruits and flowers grow on the
trees.
- Animals found in this layer include
- jaguars, red-eyed treefrogs,
- snakes, parakeets, and
- leopards. There is the largest
- concentration of insects here.
7The Forest Floor
The Forest Floor is the darkest layer. Since
hardly any sun reaches the forest floor things
begin to decay quickly. The forest floor is
mostly made up of organic or leaf litter (rotting
things).
Animals found in this layer include The Giant
Ant Eater, termites, cockroaches,
beetles, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions and
earthworms, along with the fungi,
