Title: Wetland Intro
1Wetland Intro
2Wetlands
- Wetlands are marshy areas where there is much
moisture in the soil. Wetlands are sometimes
covered in water. Swamps, marshes, and bogs are
some of the names used for wetlands.
3Types of Wetlands
4Vernal Pools
- Vernal pools derive their name from Latin
vernus, meaning belonging to spring.
- These usually small, but very dynamic wetlands
fill with water, blossom with life and host of
life forms every spring, only to disappear into
the forest floor every autumn.
5Macro invertebrates
Freshwater macro-invertebrates are animals
without backbones that are larger than ½
millimeter (the size of a pencil dot). These
animals live on rocks, logs, sediment, debris and
aquatic plants during some period in their life.
6Life Cycle of Aquatic Insects
- What is a nymph?
- How about larvae?
- Are your thinking about maggots?
- Well, you are partially correct. Chances are you
already are familiar with the adult forms of many
aquatic insects.
7- Complete Metamorphosis
- 4 stages
- Larvae do not resemble the adults, and in fact,
may look grossly different. - During the pupae stage, the organisms inhabit a
"cocoon-like" structure where the transformation
from larvae to adult occurs.
- Incomplete metamorphosis
- 3 main stages of development (except for the
mayfly that has two winged growing stages). - Nymphs undergo a series of molts resemble the
adults closely except for wing development. - No Pupae Stage
