What is peat Peat is a soft heterogenous mixture
of partly decayed plant matter that has
accumulated in a water-saturated environment and
in the absence of oxygen. A peatland is an area
with naturally accumulated peat layer at the
surface.
  • The peat in the Norfolk Broads area was cut
out of the ground during medieval times to be
    used as a fuel
  • During the 14th century the sea levels rose,
    flooding the peat-dug trenches
  • In all there are 40 Broads all of varying size,
linked by 120 miles of waterways, rivers, and
    channels
