USC INBRE PROGRAM
RESEARCH PROGRAM-TARGET FACULTY
IDENTIFY TARGET FACULTY FOR THEMATIC GROWTH
DEVELOP RESEARCH PROJECTS LIKELY TO LEAD TO
NATIONAL FUNDING
DEVELOP A SCIENTIST-MENTOR RELATIONSHIP
FORMULATE RESEARCH PROGRAM INCLUDING BUDGETS AND
DEADLINES FOR GRANT SUBMISSIONS.
(WEVE DONE ALL THIS STUFF)

USC INBRE PROGRAM
cMYC Regulation of Angiogenesis
TROY BAUDINO
Overall goal is to examine cMYC regulation of
growth factor expression
Examining the relationship of stromal cells,
tumor cells in the regulation of
VEGF. Cell-cell regulation by cadherins
Progress-one RO1 submitted, AHA grant to be
submitted on Jan. 1

Interactions Between Cardiac Fibroblasts and
Myocytes
Cardiac Fibroblasts Green
Cardiac Myocytes Orange
15
USC INBRE PROGRAM
JEFFERY BISCHOFF Fibroblast-Myocyte-ECM
Interaction
Overall goal- to understand the mechanics of the
formation of ECM-fibroblast-myocyte contact
(papillary muscle model)
Progress- Abstracts at BMES, AHA grant in
preparation for January submission, NIH-R21
grant in preparation

valvular morphogenesis. Dark blue is endocardium
and cushion mesenchyme Light blue is ECM Red is
myocardial tissue .

South Carolina
17
Cell stretching
Custom developed uniaxial stretching system. This
system can apply cyclic uniaxial deformation to
the cell-cell interface. The deformation is
applied to the silicone rubber sheet using a 1.8
degree stepper motor and a mechanical controller
(Newmark System Inc. Mission Viejo, CA) with a
displacement resolution of 0.02 micrometers. The
movement of the motor is programmed by OMS
Terminal (Oregon Micro Systems, Inc, Beaverton,
OR)
18
USC INBRE PROGRAM
SUSAN LESSNER Angiogenesis and Capillary
Permeability in Atherosclerotic Lesions
Overall goal- understand the regulation of
capillary growth and permeability in
atherosclerotic lesion
Progress- Established model, making measurements,
AHA grant in preparation for January
submission
19
Angiogenesis in Experimental Atherosclerosis
Fluorescence microangiography of mouse carotid
artery lesion
20
USC INBRE PROGRAM
SARAH BAXTER ECM Receptor and ECM Matrix
Organization
Overall goal- to understand the dynamic between
ECM receptors, organization of the ECM, and
mechanical force.
Progress- NSF grant submitted, abstracts for
American Society for Cell Biology, NIH RO1
planned for June 1.
