• Most are born blind and helpless

• Warm-blooded
• Have hair

• Reproduce sexually

Making Milk

• All mammals have mammary glands
• Mammary glands are structures that make milk
• Only produce milk in mature females
• Use milk to feed young

Breathing Air

• Use lungs to get oxygen from the air
• Oxygen releases energy from food
• Diaphragm a large muscle that helps bring air
  into the lungs
• Located below ribs

HAIR

• Only animals that have hair
• Stay warm
• Thick hair fur
• Most mammals have a layer of fat under their hair
• Thick layer of fat ? blubber

• Front teeth bite and cut (incisors)
• Behind incisors canine teeth grip and tear
• In back molars shred grind
• Mammals have different teeth based on what they

• Parents care for and protect young
