International Organization for Standardization
(ISO)
  • The ISO is a non-government organization and
network of the national standards institutes of
countries, one member per country, with a Central
    Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that
    coordinates the system
  • The purpose of ISO (founded in 1947) is to
    facilitate the internationalization and
unification of standards and related activities
over almost the entire range of technology
(except that covered by the International
    Electrotechnical Commission (IEC))

ANSI IPC MISSION
  • Develop and maintain ANSIs international
strategies and goals for standards and conformity
    assessment to achieve these objectives
  •          Foster global trade
  •          Meet societal needs related to
security, safety, health, and the environment
  •          Promote fair play and equitable
    national treatment within global standardization
    infrastructures
  •          Promote effective leadership and
technical expertise in international and regional
    organizations
  •          Protect intellectual property rights
  •          Enhance global competitiveness of U.S.
    business.
  •

8
ANSI IPC STRATEGIES
  • Encourage international adoption of US sector
supported standards or new work item proposals to
facilitate trade in goods and delivery of
services in the manner preferred by the business
    sectors involved.
  • Advance the ANSI Cardinal Principles of openness,
transparency, balance of interests and voluntary
consensus in international, regional and national
    standards development
  • Promote continuous improvement in the efficiency
and cost effectiveness of standards development
and conformity assessment processes around the
world, including coordination on emerging and
    converging technologies.
  • Encourage participation and diversity to improve
the balance of stakeholder interests in national,
    regional and international standards and
    conformity assessment activities

9
ANSI IPC STRATEGIES
  • Identify, recruit and support qualified
individuals to serve in leadership and technical
expert positions in the international standards
    and conformity assessment arenas
  • Develop and maintain cooperative, collaborative
    and credible partnerships with organizations
related to international commerce and public
    interest
  • Support and mentor developing nations to focus on
standards participation in sectors key to their
    national economy.
  • Establish effective communications processes and
    educational programs.

10
ANSI AIC STRATEGIES
  • Identify specific policy and procedural needs of
    differing sectors.
  • Advocate policy and procedural flexibility in
    international and regional standards
organizations to support the needs of different
    sectors.
  • Consider establishing mechanisms in international
and regional standards organizations for sectors
to fund special services supporting technical
    work.
  • Promote the understanding that the term
international standard is not limited to only
those developed by ISO, IEC and ITU-T.

11
ANSI AIC STRATEGIES
  • Establish cooperative and procedural frameworks
to coordinate the work programs of various
    organizations to realize one international
standard on a given subject and to minimize
    resource burdens for stakeholders.
  • Ensure ISO, IEC and ITU-T properly respect the
rights and commercial property of partners or
    other organizations developing globally relevant
    standards
  • Continually provide for effective communications
and promotion on global relevance to ensure
    consistent implementation.

    intention to actively participate
  • Established by the Technical Management Board
  • TMB determines title and scope
  • The scope defines the limits of the work of the
    TC
  • TMB assigns Secretariat
  • TMB ratifies (endorses) selection of Chairman
(this action may be taken at a later date)

17
Subcommittees (SC)
  • Established and dissolved by the parent TC,
