Lesson Overview
  • Own Ship
  • Line of Sight
  • Bearing
  • True
  • Relative
  • Reciprocal
  • Bearing Drift
  • Target Angle
  • Cardinal Intercardinal Directions
  • True
  • Relative

3
Own Ship
  • Self-explanatory - your ship

4
Bearing
  • imaginary line of direction across the water (or
land) from you to an object such as a ship.
  • This imaginary line is also called a line of
    sight.

Own Ship (You)
Other Ship
5
Bearing
  • Measured in degrees clockwise from a reference
    point.
  • Always use three digits to express a bearing in
    degrees.

6
True Bearing
  • Measured from true north clockwise to the line of
    sight.

7
True Bearing
Own ship heading does not affect true bearing
135
Contact heading does not affect true bearing
8
Reciprocal Bearing
  • Bearing in the opposite direction of the line of
    sight.

9
Reciprocal Bearing
Like true bearing, own ship and contact headings
do not affect the reciprocal bearing
10
Relative Bearing
  • Measured from own ships heading clockwise to the
    line of sight.
  • Ships bow is always 000R.

315 270R
045 000R
Always specify relative bearings with R
11
Relative Bearing
Own ship heading DOES affect relative bearing
Contact heading does not affect relative bearing
12
Converting Bearings
  • To convert between true and relative bearing

Target Angle
Relative bearing from contact to you
Own ship heading does not affect target angle
Contact heading DOES affect target angle
14
Bearing Drift
  • Simply a change in bearing
  • Can be used to determine whether the contact will
    pass ahead or astern
  • Right Bearing Drift - bearing increases
  • Left Bearing Drift - bearing decreases
  • Constant Bearing - no bearing change

15
Cardinal andIntercardinal Directions
  • Provide another means to express direction.
  • You already know now to express true cardinal
    directions.
