Title: 151 Chadburn Squadron
1151 Chadburn Squadron Year End Trip - North Bay
and Sudbury
The Big Nickel Sudbury
2 North American Aerospace Defense Command
(NORAD) The original Norad complex was built
some 700 feet below the surface at North Bay.
Today it is housed in the new building that you
see here.
Unfortunately cell phones and cameras are not
allowed in the building but the cadets in small
groups had a chance to see and hear about the
radar system that blankets our country. The
cadets toured the main computer room and they
were given briefings from five different
observers who were monitoring and controlling the
different aspects of the radar system.
3 22 Wing North Bay provides
surveillance, identification, control, and
warning for the aerospace defence of Canada and
North America. This surveillance and
identification of all air traffic approaching
North America (some 200,000 flights per year) is
accomplished using radar information received via
satellite from the North Warning System across
the Canadian Arctic, coastal radars on the east
and west coasts of Canada, and Airborne Warning
and Control System Aircraft.

8Cadets had a chance to pan for real gold
particles and if you were fortunate to find some
the attendants mounted your sample on a card for
you to take home.
9The real nickel mine at Sudbury is not open to
the public so a simulated mine is located under
the Dynamic Earth exhibit complex.
As one can see the mine exhibit has all the
equipment and structure of an operating mine.
